The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League begins its 41st season tonight and the league's commissioner promises a continuation of a crackdown on violence that started last season.

"The QMJHL's 40th season represented a turning point in the very culture of hockey," said Gilles Courteau on Wednesday. "Important adjustments were made in order to eliminate gratuitous violence and with the help of our owners, governors, general managers, coaches and players we were able to reach our goals. Unacceptable incidents were punished swiftly and severely. The result: A very significant decline in gratuitous violence and a sizeable drop in fights per game.

"Furthermore, we created a Players Help Program; a pilot project destined to educate players on the consequences of their actions and life choices."

The QMJHL and Canadian Hockey League season opens tonight as the defending Presidents Cup champion Drummondville Voltigeurs host the Val-d'Or Foreurs. Play in the CHL's other two major junior circuits - the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League - begins next week.

A dozen players from Newfoundland and Labrador are on the opening-day rosters of QMJHL clubs. One quarter of that contingent can be found on the P.E.I. Rocket, where 19-year-old goaltender Evan Mosher of Conception Bay South is joined by 18-year-old forwards Brandon Street of Bonavista and Jordan Escott of St. John's.

The Montreal Junior have two Newfoundlanders in their lineup - defenceman Alex Wall of St. John's and centre Chris Thorne of Paradise - both 19-year-old and both of whom were with the St. John's Fog Devils before the franchise was sold and relocated to Verdun, Que., two years ago.

Another former Fog Devil, centre Luke Adam of Kilbride, is expected to be the top forward with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles after having been acquired in an off-season trade with Montreal. Adam, 19, is currently at the training camp of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, who selected him in the second round of the 2007 draft.

Other players from this province in the Q include 19-year-old Labrador City native Nicolas Champion, who starts the season as the No. 1 goalie for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan; 19-year-old Brad Yetman of Mount Pearl, who heads up the blueline corps of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies; Victoriaville Tigres right-winger Brandon Hynes, 17, of Norris Point, who was the third overall pick in the 2008 QMJHL midget draft, 17-year-old rookie defenceman Steve Gillard of St. John's and 18-year-old right-winger Travis Randell of Twillingate, both with the Halifax Mooseheads; and 16-year-old Scott Trask of St. John's, a first-year forward with the Moncton Wildcats, who begin the season as one of the top-10 rated teams in the CHL.

Note

On Wednesday, the QMJHL also officially announced a new initiative to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. During the month of October, each of the 18 QMJHL teams will select a home game in which their players will wear a pink jersey.

Over 400 game-worn jerseys will then be sold or raffled off ,with the proceeds going either directly to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Atlantic division) or to a local branch. Foundation (Atlantic division) or to a local branch.

Earl N from St. Johns, NL writes: Much to the dismay of Q fans -- and former Fog Devil fans -- who are unable to attend games this year, Telus has decided to charge a fee to watch games online. Last year there was a four-dollar charge to watch games that were offered in high-quality, however a low-quality feed was always available for free.

This year Telus is charging $200 for the entire season, $7 for each individual game, $4 for 24-hour access to archived games. Come playoffs you can buy each series for $20 or the entire playoffs for $100. Of course those who subscribe to Telus high-speed internet can access all these games for free.

This is bad news for those of us who would like to keep up-to-speed with how our Newfoundland-born players are doing in the Q. I guess we'll be relegated to watching the boxscores and reading poorly-written articles on the national sports websites.

With that, I'd like to wish all our NL-born players a safe and productive season with their respective teams.

Laughable from Nl writes: Earl: Why shouldn't Telus charge for this service? I realize it is a change from last year but what is wrong with trying to make money from the service they are providing?

Frank from NL writes: Sure would be nice to have a team right here in St.John's. Mile One continues to go dark. Shouldn't this be an election issue?

Earl N from St. Johns, NL writes: To Laughable: I'm not necessarily saying that Telus shouldn't charge for this service, however when the service that now costs $7 for a three-hour game was previously free, it raises questions as to whether or not it's turned into a money racket. I cannot afford to pay seven dollars to sit in front of my computer for three hours in order to watch a game, and I'm certainly not going to pay four dollars to watch a game that's already happened.

To Frank: I had a look at this year's calendar of events at Mile One Centre, and there were/are thirteen different musical acts this year, not counting shows like Alegria, Motocross and Copperfield. That's an average of about one musical act per month. What's more concerning is that this hockey arena had seven days/nights booked for sporting events: four for the Atlantic PeeWee championships and three for the Herder. 365 days in the year and you can find sports at Mile One for 7 of them.

To sports fans this should definitely be an election issue. Those who don't care about sports probably shouldn't worry; Mile One Sobeys isn't too far over the horizon.

Rob M from NL writes: Here we are with one of the best arenas east of Montreal it is sitting there empty. 5 or 6 shows planned over the next three months.

Maybe this should be an election issue.
What is council going to do to ensure all future anchor tenants are given fair and reasonable treatment?

Irene Goodland from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta writes: When did this come up about paying to watch the games on computer ? I haven't seen anything on the website to confirm this. But then if I have to pay to watch our grandson ( Brandon Street ) play then so be it. But if we have to pay lets hope we get better reception than last year , of air half the time.
