Paul Oram resigns as health minister, MHA Breaking News print this article

The Telegram

After just three months as the province’s Minister of Health, Paul Oram this morning announced he was leaving politics due to health reasons, partly caused by media scrutiny.
At a hastily called news conference, Oram said he was stepping down as both minister and as MHA, effective today.
Oram said he has serious blood pressure issues and that he attributed this, in part, to the hard time members of the media have given him and his family while covering issues related to health care in the province.

“My doctor advised me on the weekend if I don’t get this under control I’ll probably be using one of my own facilities,” said Oram, who owns funeral homes and personal care home facilities.

“People need to remember, the media needs to remember this — it’s alright for you to tear the strip off a member or minister because we go into this racket realizing it’s going to happen.
“But my little girl is sitting home listening to the radio, watching the television. Responsible reporting is something that needs to be looked at.”

He noted the resignation has nothing to do with his relationship with Premier Danny Williams whom he referred to as a mentor.
Oram was appointed head of the health department in July, shifting portfolios from business with former health minister Ross Wiseman who was under fire for more than a year and saw heights of discontent in the province within the health-care system.
Oram also recently came under fire with announcements of the cancelling of X-ray and lab services in Lewisporte and Flower’s Cove.
He relented on a decision to cut services at the clinic in Flower's Cove to just 12 hours and stated last week the clinic will continue to provide service on a 24-hour basis. Oram was criticized for reversing his decision as a political move, given that a bylection has been called for the area.
Further details later.

Nasty Nate from St Johns, NL writes: Guess Danny was just too much stress. Looks like a long term disability claim to me.

Be a big party if this was Flipper Williams bowing out due to stress. He has stressed the population out long enough, his turn now.

Wait... What? from St. Johns, NL writes: What's this, the fall of the Williams Empire! Like the rest sooner or later all fall from grace.

Must be nice to walk away with that golden hand shake for so little service. Might be an idea for the new government to overturn the MHA pay raises and pensions just a little to reflect the same living status the average person in this province has.

Dave from NL writes: Sorry to hear about the personal health issues but considering all that has transpired in that department over the last number of years, how could anyone accept the health portfolio in the first place and not expect it to be stressful? Evidently, Oram must have had no idea what he was getting into.

ren from pei writes: There ya go, another fighting newfoundlander for ya, gone. These guys are better at cashing cheques then earning them. Maybe the raise wasn't high enough. Don't try and save money on the backs of the peoples essential health. Isn't it ironic, that he has to use the same mess the was in charge of. Ross wisemen never lost no time in his new position, he gave half a million dollars to a muti BILLION dollar company, nice..good one. Get in line Hedderson and Johnson. He at least can afford to go away to to get treatment. Nalcor is hiring! Its still our tax dollars. Its just as good!

Tom from NL writes: Good luck Mr. Oram. Tough position to say the least. I can only imagine the comments from the anti-administration bozo's that frequent this site that will be posted here soon. No conspriacy, no locking horns with the premier. Just personal.

Bob from NL writes: I wish Mr. Oram well and hope that his health situation improves...BUT......

Its PAINFULLY OBVIOUS that the man was in over his head. To say that the media pressure caused the high blood pressure is disingenuous.

Two questions:
- When did Mr. Oram become eligible for the MHA pension?
- Who does Danny turn to now? Outside of Beth Marshall I don't see anyone on his team with the skills to run this portfolio....unless he shifts Marshall or Kennedy to Health. Who's gonna to take this portfolio when they know all decision have to go through the 8th Floor?

Jason from NL writes: Doesnt add up, why didnt he take a medical leave? Maybe Like Mr Taylor he has had enough of serving people that do nothing but complain but have no suggestions for solutions other than spend the province into debt. Politics is a no win Job for sure, wouldnt pay me enough money to do that job.

Dennis Rice from Ottawa, ON writes: Health reasons? Seems like he didn't enjoy having a portfolio requiring actual work. Perhaps somebody should have warned him going in that the people of the province, and their media, would have a keen interest with the way their healthcare was handled.

Who's next? Lord knows that if you fell into the remaining back bench talent pool, you wouldn't get wet.*

*With the obvious exception of Elizabeth Marshall, who will obviously be excluded again.

Robert from NL writes: Oram blames the media for his health problems? What a crock. The media only asked questions that he or his staff should have the answers to. I suggest that any stress that he suffered from is related to trying to ensure that the answers given do not impact his political future or that of his mentor.
Healthcare is a tough portfolio requiring a decisive and visionary leader. Oram was over his head, Willams should have known this when he appointed him to the role. I hope that he makes a better choice for Oram's replacement.

Sandy from NL writes: Hey Paul, you may not like CBC, but CBC is the only source of news and investigative journalisn. They do excellent work; they are the unofficial opposition as far as I am concerned. Without CBC, what would I know what's going on. All I get from NTV and VOCM is a re-read of NEWS RELEASES issued by the NL Governemnt. The Telegram is improving and is my second reliable source of information.

don from Newfoundland and Labrador writes: The Health Minister has health problems due to stress! Will former Minister Paul Oram have to travel some 100 km or more to get medical care just like the poor folks in Flower's Cove and Lewisporte will have to do because of his lack of compassion? I hear that working for Dictator Danny can shorten your political life and maybe even shorten your actual life. Join the club Paul, with Fabian Manning, Elizabeth Marshall, Tom Rideout, Trevor Taylor and the others whose names I don't recall. All who have fallen out of favor with the Dictator. When the day comes that Dictator Danny tenders his resignation, the people will be free and we hopefully will elect a true leader who is of the people and for the people. Good luck in your future endeavors Mr. Oram. Now that you are out of the pressure cooker and away from the Dictator, I sincerely hope your health returns soon.

STOP THE RACKET from NL writes: My sympathy goes out to you Bones my friend. Looks like the Williams Dictatorship may have at last peaked and is on the way down and out. Could it be? Hopefully so. STOP THE RACKET STOP DANNY WILLIAMS.

Dan from NL writes: Great news... Oram never should have been appointed as Minister of Health to begin with... I trust that the recent resignation of two Ministers is a sign that the Williams cartel is losing its popularity... the PC's in NL have to much of a monopoly to begin with... to much power and authority can go to ones' head, and when decisions are made by power hungry officials, the populace will begin to question those decisions and those in power start to relent and hang their tails between their legs and slither off like the sly foxes they are... their empire is starting to crumble... hopefully Danny will be the next out of the door.

Tim Sick of it all from NL writes: Well I guess he did not want to be treated like Tom Osborne when he was in Health. Ha! Got in there (well dropped into the portfolio) and was told to read the bureaucratic scripted releases and hey don't keep notes. Funny that a guy who loved calling open line shows as the Govt. cheerleader suddenly blames the media for his woes.

tim bennett from corner brook, NL writes: Even as he is going out the door, Mr Oram refuses to give the right and proper explaination to his hasty retreat.
my, my how can one person in the lives of people get such a powerful stranglehold on them. Like the others, Mr Oram appears to cover his own tail in case there is a plum for him somewhere in the political mix. Don't offend the premier because if you do, it will haunt you for as long as he (Danny)has the reigns.
In a secret ballot I bet Mr Oram would not even vote for Premier Danny Williams today.

rod from nl writes: I hate to see bright individuals forced out of politics. Thank-you Mr. Oram for trying to help the people of this province. Its the crap that politicians have to go through that prevents many more outstanding individuals from running for public life. These idiots that have no life and all they want to do is complain that are causing the problems. You can plainly see this from previous comments. Running this province is not straight forward. There is no way to please everyone. All you can do is try and help the majority of residents, do whats right in the long term. Its VERY difficult making some of these decisions that have to be made. Nobody enjoys Giving bad news any more than someone enjoys recieving it. So in future .. if you want to complain ... do it against the party ... NOT THE MEMBER. How would you feel if your kids were crying because IDIOTS were degrading you ??

amazed from NL writes: It must be nice to be a politician and be able to quit at the drop of a hat for various reasons and not worry about next months car/mortgage payments, unlike those of us in the real world who work, deal with our stresses, AND keep working, cause otherwise you are in financial trouble. Like maybe, to name but one group of many, health care professionals, who deal with more stress in one day than Oram has dealt with since his short tenure as Minister of health. What a joke politics is!

Blue Ink from St. John's, NL writes: I have no sympathy for Mr. Oram. Being in politics requires you have a thick skin. The Health portfolio is a high-profile one indeed, and being on the news night after night comes with the job. This is what he was being paid those big $$$ for.

Hopefully now though, his family life can get back to normal, so in that regards, I sincerely wish him the best of luck.

Frank Blackwood from Richmond Hill, Ontario writes: From the beginning of Paul's appointment as Minister Of Health, I felt that he was too good of a man to be pushed into the Eastern Health's pits of fire.
You cannot do justice in The Williams govenment when you have the iron fist in your face and paper clips on your lips.
This is how the Williams government is working, and it must be very frustrating for Paul Oram.
It's like a ball game, you put your hopefuls in positions where you feel they will cover up for you the most. This is what Danny Williams is doing, and he will destroy many more of his players before too long.

Mr. Oram, you have made the right move, sit with the fans who have appreciated you in the past. The media are not to blame Paul, it's your boss. He already said. anyone who gets involved in this mess there must be something wrong with them.He was referring to politics and his mess.

What a load of horse sh*t political leaders we got.

The Mut and Jeff guys could run this little province very effectively.

A pox on all politicans and the greed they harbor.

Meanwhile back at the court house the political crooks continue to que up.

Bayman from NL writes: How can any of you people call out any politician? If you think Oram, Danny or anyone else for that matter is doing a poor job, why don't YOU run for the position? Then you'll see the crap these people have to go through, dealing with the low-lifes of society who chronically complain no matter who's in government.

But that's right, you don't have time. How can you find time away from your busy day of waking up, putting on coffee, and sitting at your computer at home in your jammies, self-righteously spewing your opinions and complaints about others who are trying to lead this province and ultimately serve you.

This site is notorious for spreading propaganda, and housing low-lifes who have nothing better to do than slam others, because they are so unhappy with their own sorry lives.
