Court rules tie in votes — Wiseman still mayor Breaking News print this article
The Telegram

Having his name drawn out of a recycling bin has seated Ralph Wiseman in the mayor’s chair at the town of Paradise.
A judicial recount in provincial court found that a tie in votes stands.
Judge David Orr thus turned the situation back in the hands of the town’s returning officer who indicated the draw of names stands and Wiseman will be sworn in as mayor — as well as the rest of council — tonight.
Kurtis Coombs initially won the election on Sept. 29 by three votes, but a recount in the town resulted in a tie in votes. Wiseman then won the mayor’s seat in a draw of names that caused much debate among residents of the town.
Wiseman said he will make a statement tonight at the town hall.

Chris LeDrew from Paradise, NL writes: Anyone want to buy a house in Paradise? Comes with no services, no parks, no rec facilities, no vision and a mayor with a 50+ agenda

God help us all out here for the next 4 yrs......

Corrinea Lawlor from Paradise, Newfoundland writes: I was really hoping that things would change and that Kurtis Coombs would become mayor of Paradise but I guess it was not to be, Congratulation to Mr. Wiseman and I am hoping that we do not hear the last of Mr. Coombs. I would have elected for a recount in the town and I bet the outcome would have been totally different.

Paradise from NL writes: Just shows that your vote does indeed count. People need to get out and vote. Otherwise, they can be left with an unjust system like this.

what paradise? from nl writes: wiseman ...will make a statement tonight at the town hall. he won't be one bit humbled by the fact that half the voters were against him and he is there by the draw of the hat. That's the worst part of all this - another 4 years of ralph not getting the big picture!

Sam from Nl writes: What a mockery. Wiseman's condecending attitude throughout this joke is an insult to everyone who lives on Paradise. Enjoy your last term in any office you pitiful old man.

Joe Cardona from CBS, NL writes: So sorry Kurtis, Hey no worries, ask your Mom if you can run again next term. I am sure he'll forget to run by then anyway.

Colin from NL writes: Congratulations.... Now its time for Coombs to shut up whining about it all. It wasn't meant to be, really tho, a 19yr old mayor who lives with his parents... If you cannot budget a house yourself, how can you budget a town??

Relieved that the future of our town lies in a respectable and well experienced person.

Once again congrats!

DB from NL writes: Who is at fault for the situation you are in the people who live there and decided to let less then half the population decide your fate. All I can say is i am glad i live in CBS good luck with living in the past Wiseman, funny isn't it with a name like wiseman he's not real wise is he.

Jack Barrett from Gillams, NL writes: Let it be remember that October 13, 2009 as the day civic and municipal democracy has died in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Maybe Danny Williams and the Newfoundland and Labrador Government should make changes to the Municipal Elections act so that the true definitions of democracy, ruled by the people, for the people, and from the people , are met and enforced.

Mike from Newfoundland writes: Guess we now have the makings of another Newfoundland Joke:

Question: How do you elect the mayor in the town of Paradise Newfoundland.

Answer: Draw his name out of a recycling bin.

Only it is not a joke!!!

Incredible!!!!!!

LE from Paradise, NL writes: The process has run its course, and as much as I don't like Mr. Wiseman, I'm glad he won. (Didn't think I'd ever say that.) Wiseman is light years ahead of a 19 year old full time student who has to get a ride to go vote because he doesn't even have a drivers licence! Coombs has not the first clue of what happens in government. He would only be a drag on the town for the next few years while he tried to learn what its all about!

Patrick from Paradise, Nfld writes: First, DB from NL, CBS had a worse voter turn out than Paradise, so don't be so smug.
Next, Kurtis was against a draw from a hat, now he wants one, go figure. And now he wants an injunction??? Did his mother tell him to do this?
Everything was done according to the law and the associated acts, so everyone should live with it. Those who didn't vote should shut up, if you had voted maybe things would be differrent. Let's just all accept what happened and move on. I hope Kurtis doesn't get his injunction, he doesn't deserve it.
Also, for Kurtis, keep in there, go to meetings, stay active and learn. Run for council in 4 years, then for mayor, then if you want run Provincially or federally, you will make a great politician one day so keep it going and stay in the limelight.
One last piece of advice, take advice from mom, but mom should stay in the background, she isn't good for your public image.

Ken Our west from Newfoundland and Labrador writes: You know, I think its time for Kurtis to focus on the next 4 years, Also I think Ralphy boy needs to get off his smug high horse and understand that he retained his job by the luck of a draw.... I beleive that A mayor should spend time as a councillor before taking on a Mayors role, but seeing how cocky Ralph has been acting I'm glad he nearly lost his seat, So congats Kurtis, the old guy meet his match, now prep for the race in 4 yeaars, Ralphy will not have the gonads to run against you.. Cheers

Mike from NL writes: Kurtis, now is the time to step back with class. You will be rewarded if you take the high road young man. Wiseman handled this poorly with his condensending attitude but you must rise above this , go back to school and let Ralph keep the seat warm for you..
