Former Archbishop Penney returns from holiday, but says not well enough to speak to media Breaking News print this article
The Telegram

Archbishop Alphonsus L. Penney, the former Archbishop of St. John’s, returned to the province on Oct. 29 after a month-long holiday but says the state of his health prevents him from conducting media interviews regarding what he knew about former Bishop Raymond Lahey’s alleged possession of child pornography 20 years ago.
According to a news release, Penney says he recognizes media have been interested in speaking with him since charges were laid against Lahey.
Lahey resigned as bishop of the diocese of Antigonish, N.S., in September after he was charged with possessing and importing child pornography in Ontario.
Catholic Priest Kevin Molloy has said he cautioned Lahey about the consequences of having pornography more than 20 years ago in St. John’s. Molloy also said he called then St. John’s Archbishop Penney and told him about it.
The news release states Penney says it is unlikely he will be commenting on the Lahey situation while it is before the courts. He regrets that because of health issues that he will not be available for interviews.
According to the news release Penney, 85, is legally blind and has severe hearing loss. Penney says he will meet with two medical specialists this week to look at ongoing health issues.

Really? from NL writes: Apparently Mr. Penney has the same ailments that he had 20 years ago. Blind, deaf and dumb (by choice) to what was going on around him...

Shockin great deal from NL writes: You cal ALWAYS cite health problems when you don't want to answer some very pointed questions......Penney returns from holiday, but says not well enough to speak to media ------ but apparently he has enough strength and presence of mind to travel.......for a holiday.....anything to avoid the spotlight.....Maybe pointed questions should have been asked when he was 'vacationing' as he was more fit???

Brian from Ontario writes: Penney has been both blind and deaf on this issue for many years. His and the church's culpability in these matters is already well known & unforgivable.

Wanda from NL writes: The hierarchy of the RC Church will never live up to what has happened and the abuse will continue. It appears that some of these men can get out of Newfoundland, such as Lahey, and Canada to escape justice.

GAR from Mount Pearl, NL writes: Penney's not well enough to speak to the media but he'll be meeting with two medical specialists this week ? Guess he wasn't well enough 20+ years ago either, when Father Molloy informed him how Lahey was getting his jollies. Perhaps Penney will get a note from the doctor advising that any contact with the media would be more hazardous to his health.

Leah from NL writes: Penney regrets that because of health issues he won't be available for interviews regarding Lahey. Yes, I imagine he is broken-hearted. How convenient All he has to say is one word...YES. He was obviously DEAF over twenty years or more; deaf to the truth, but he certainly had his senses to transfer all the criminals to carry on their actions; to heck with the victims.
Another so-called man of God with no conscience.

Grant from nl writes: we have a lot of terrible groups, the nazis, mafia, and so on, and then we have the catholic church who over the centuries tortured, abused, raped, froze and starved millions of little boys and girls who didnt have anyone to turn to. they fed there own pockets with poor peoples money. when the pope visited, you could see people lined up just to kiss and touch his hand, while (some) his priest were raping there kids. religion is a addictive way of life. remember it started when the first scroungel met the first fool.

Syd from nl writes: Yes, there have been 'some' priests who have molested chilren and they have been and will continued to be punished. But judging by the unwarranted and hateful attack on the Catholic Church as a whole here these priests are outnumbered 10,000 to one by the fools who make such comments.

I think it was Jesus who said 'Let he who have not sinned cast the first stone'. Either we have a lot of non sinners reading Telegram or a lot of fools.

Dave d'Entremont from St. Johns, NL writes: Once again the Catholic church is doing a horrible job of being up front and honest with the people of this province. What really bothers me about all of this is that the church is trying to bury it's head further in the sand and see if the problem is gone when they raise their head. Of course everyone in the management positions in the church knew that this was on the go and chose to ignore it or to shuffle the problems ( priests ) around. The Catholic church seems to be a place where sick and perverted people went to become priests as they knew that in order to live their lives being pedophiles the safest place to go without going to jail was to Serve God and abuse children at will. What a terrible shame that this organization is not audited in some way as to purge the evil......

Either we have a lot of non sinners reading Telegram or a lot of fools.-----Yes, Syd, and it was the same Jesus that said “But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”......I don't cast the first stone, but I do accuse those who do nothing to prevent the perversion currently happening in ALL churches, not JUST the Roman Catholic church...It is WRONG totally, and you cannot dispute it!!

Dave from Fl. writes: It's sad to hear what is still happening and has happened in years pastto our children... For the socalled archbishop to do nothing but send this dirtbag to another congregation is appaling. The RC church is not the only ones that do this.Check out the Jehovah Witnesses.Silentlmbs.com . Just as bad

John from St John's, NL writes: Laughable ! Archbishop Penny getting on with this nonsense. What a disgrace. Instead of the RC Church removing the pedophiles completely from the church, they move them someplace else to continue molesting children. I don't believe they've weeded all of them out yet. When I see a priest, I no longer think of a holy man, I think of a pervert. Until the RC Church gets woman in the church - nothing is going to change. If there were woman in the RC Church this would not be happening.

What a scumbag. Always was. Allowed children to be abused and knew of it all along. And did nothing but PROTECT the abusers!!!
