Special H1N1 vaccines to arrive today print this article
Health Supply of regular shots still tight

Special H1N1 vaccines are coming for pregnant women and were expected to arrive in the province today.

The province will also receive about 1,000 more regular vaccines than it expected in this week's limited allotment from Health Canada.

Some 2,900 doses of the unadjuvanted vaccine - which is most recommended for pregnant women - will be given out by appointment because of the smaller numbers requiring it, Health Minister Jerome Kennedy announced Monday in his daily media briefing with provincial chief medical officer Dr. Faith Stratton.

Kennedy said it was expected the regular H1N1 vaccine was expected to run out in the St. John's area by today, but not in rural Avalon.

But some 7,500 doses of the adjuvanted - a faster reacting vaccine - will arrive Wednesday.

Kennedy said he would announce today what groups would be now vaccinated, but intends to keep the focus on children.

Adults with chronic health conditions were originally considered high risk and of priority to get vaccines, but because of mass lineups lasting hours, the criteria was tightened Friday.

Not only were healthy people lining up to get the vaccine along with children and people with chronic conditions, but many nurses were offering the vaccine to parents who brought their kids in.

So the rules were tightened to children six months to five years and people up to age 24 with chronic health conditions, pregnant women in the second half of their pregnancy and then, Sunday, caregivers of people that can't be immunized in those age ranges, as well as those of infants.

Many worried people have been publicly critical of the decision to exclude adults with chronic health conditions and Kennedy acknowledged he has received e-mails from people asking when their turn would come.

The province's first death from H1N1 was a 36-year-old woman with an underlying health condition in central Newfoundland.

"Yesterday I was shook up. Still, today, I really want to send out condolences to the family of that lady who died," Kennedy said.

"I sat there yesterday and wondered am I making the right decision ... (but) I feel looking after our children I am doing the right thing."

He said adults with chronic health conditions represent 20 per cent of the population and with the limited number of vaccines he can't just pick and choose among those adults who get it.

If the province receives its regular allotment of vaccines next week it could get up to 57,000 doses. Children under 10 only need a half dose, which has allowed the vaccine to be spread further.

Stratton said Monday 26 more people were admitted to hospital with respiratory illness in a 24-hour period since Sunday, with seven of those in intensive care and four on ventilators. The seven are in central and western. Though it's not known exactly how many of those hospitalized are H1N1 cases, a significant number are, Stratton said.

The virus has hit the west coast the hardest.

Besides the vaccine, medical officials have also stockpiled some 880,000 doses of antiviral Tamiflu used to treat severe symptoms.

Kennedy acknowledged the mistakes that were made Friday with the immunization clinics and said Eastern Health is looking into why the policy on who was to be given the vaccine didn't filter down, as well as how health care workers last week were able to sneak in family members to get the vaccine.

Some of the lineups at Eastern Health seemed to be running smoother Monday.

Monday morning, there was no one waiting outside Hazelwood Elementary in the west end and people in vehicles are being screened by security on the parking lot. People were again screened at the door by Eastern Health officials and are being given numbers.

"I'm impressed," said Nicki Tonkin-Normore, who brought her two children to the clinic Monday morning. "I was expecting four to six hours."

But she was given a number and was in and out in roughly an hour. Waits on Friday around the city were as high as nine hours.

Chris Dillon brought one of his three sons Monday to Hazelwood in a tag-team effort that saw his wife go at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Cordage Place to be early in line to get a number for another of their three boys.

They are hoping their third son, aged seven, will get the vaccine in school, but have been keeping him at home until then to make sure he doesn't contract the virus.

"Why be in a panic? Wait your turn," Dillon said Monday.

Schools have continued to see high absenteeism. Some 33 of the Eastern District's 87 schools had an absenteeism rate of 20-29 per cent and 35 schools had 30-39 per cent of their student absent.

Meanwhile, Stratton noted there have been two adverse reactions to the vaccine so far - one a swelling of the throat or mouth and the other a rash.

Pregnant women wanting to make an appointment can now start calling toll free lines - set up for H1N1 concerns - and the vaccine will start to be given out Wednesday.

The toll free lines are as follows: Eastern Health 1-877-752-4358; Central Health 1-877-311-261; Western Health 1-877-632-H1N1(4161); Labrador-Grenfell Health 1-877-896-0422

L from NL writes: Just wondering, again, about the healthy kids in school, that are waiting their turn. Can't stop the clock and keep them in a bubble until they get vaccinated. With each passing day, their risk of becoming exposed increases. We will not let this take over our lives, but want to protect our school aged-kids...we have been turned away twice from the clinics.

So Mr. Kennedy. You say you are looking after our children, SO When are the children going to be vaccinated? We hear that they will be vaccinated in the schools which is great but WHEN is this going to happen? Its been long enough now. Get your priorities straight and get our children vaccinated.

calm down from nl writes: Mother Of 3 Children, calm down, your little darlings will be vaccinated when the vaccine arrives, be patient.

In the mean time, the rest of will cool our heels hoping that we don't become inflicted with this flu, rendering us with sickness or a body bag.

R from NL writes: I did call the 1877 number to inquire about an appointment for the non-adjuvanted vaccine.
They are not yet aware of HOW this vaccine is going to be distributed, where it will be distributed, etc.
And they were NOT aware of appointments being made. So they simply took my info, but I do not have an appointment.

Just so people know. You'll have to wait for Eastern Health to update their website for more info.

Janet from St. John's, NL writes: I agree with the mother of three. What about our school children. It has been long enough. Enough is enough, we want our children protected and the time is now. When the next vaccine arrives start giving it to the school children or shut the schools down until they are vaccinated. It just doesn't make sense, the criminals were vaccinated but what about our children. Who in their right mind made that decision.... while our innocent children are put at risk evey day, the criminals will be healthy enough to committ more crimes...this is sickening. Protect our children Mr. Kennedy. You say that your main focus is our school children well actions speak louder than words. The time is now and not next week.

lynn from nl writes: if our children are so important then why did the criminals at the penetiary get the shot before they did , it turns my stomach to see that those people seemed more important to the healthminister than our children , maybe if they had to wait the people with real heath problems and our children wouldnt

the children from nl writes: The children the children...vaccinate the children and do it NOW!

Only one problem with that, there ain't enough vaccine to vaccinate ALL the children.

So are your children more important than John Doe's children? Whose children should have priority?

Close the schools, let the chidren out....to roam around the neighbourhoods and malls thereby infecting the rest of us, excellent idea. We must protect the children.

Blown up by Media from Paradise writes: People, do any of you realize that stats have shown that the death rate of the normal flu is much much higher than the H1N1 so far. The media is blowing this up!!! Why is it that noone is reporting the 90 odd percent recovery rate????

Statements like Though it's not known exactly how many of those hospitalized are H1N1 cases, a significant number are, Stratton said. are what causes panic!!!! The Telegram, VOCM, CBC, CNN etc are creating this Pandemic and they are going to make things worse if they dont start reporting facts that will ease the stress on the public. But hey if they start reporting positive facts, they'll sell less papers!!!

Obviously you don't have any children or your attitude would be way different.

I have one thing to say .....Jerome Kennedy was a criminal lawyer, I guess that is his way of taking care of what he calls OUR children at the penetentary. ENOUGH SAID

buckwheat from NL writes: http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/news/QA/qaH1N1pedvax.htm

The start of a pediatric study on the H1N1 vaccine at NIAID. 75% of children below 36 months received no protection from the vaccine, and 65% of children 3 to 9 years.

Also, look at the Canadian Prelminary Study on cbc website. People who had the seasonal flu shot last yr are twice as susceptible to the swine flu. What does this tell us these vaccines are doing to our immune system??

STOP THE RACKET from NL writes: Jerome Kennedys first major challenge since Danny annointed him as Health Minister and he cant even manage this. No big surprise there anyway. The blame game will trickle on down from Dannys office as per usual. Responsible for nothing and answer to nobody thats our Danny. The man who longs for the days of a better job and wishes he were out of this racket.

Frank Blackwood from Richmond Hill, Ontario writes: I think the Federal Government and Provincial government health minister's are to be blamed for all this boggling and incompetency within the health services across Canada. The Auditor General Shelia Fraser told the Federal governmen today that its Security Risk Plan is far from being efficent and up to date. The government has been more concerned about its stance at the polls than carrying out their responsabilities towards the people. The same for the Provincial government in Newfoundland and Labrador, their minds have been concentrating more on ballots and polls rather than excellent health care plans for the people. They have all been waving and expressing words of hope and promises while people are worried about their future jobs, healtcare and well being.

It is obvious that there is someone not doing their jobs. The H1N1 Flu is certainly taking its toll and politicians are in hiding they are not willing to face the music.

Eugene from Town, Newfoundland writes: To Blown UP: You've been reading my mail...the cases are reported (ie. total number) with no breakdown. Every flu season thousands of North Americans die, yet that info is not being shared! The media/government handling of this 'pandemic' is, to be blunt, shameless; they are causing panic, telling the public that everyone needs this 'life-saving' treatment then shaking their collective heads when panic ensues!

Mind, it doesn't seem to be just one level of government or just one media outlet, although a recent editorial on these pages was the voice of reason. Take care of your health, don't let fear-mongerers put you into a state of nervous distraction and take care of your self the same way you would during any flu season (eg. cod liver oil, vitamin c, clean hands, sneeze into your arm) and stop putting all your faith in this (vaccine) or any panacea.

mommy of a small child from nl writes: ok so here is the way i see things.. our children are in no way shape or form a ' high ' priority.. if they were the schools would have the vaccine by now to give our children.. i know that yes the media has definitly blown this up a bit much but at the same time it's not worth the risk to not have my beautiful child kept well. I dont plan on taking the risk.. if that was the case I would not have given my child the chicken pox vaccine.... if you cant stand the heat Mr. Kenndy I suggest you stay out of the fire and let someone else make the decisions.. cause you dont seem to make the right ones.

G from St. John's, NL writes: I would gladly go from classroom to classroom inoculating every child who hadn't recieved their vaccination. Or set up a flu shot clinic on the sidewalk of Water Street for all to share in the wealth. Let's face it though, it's simply not as easy as that. We cannot vaccinate everyone simultaneously. Some will have theirs before others, namely those in high-risk categories. There have to be priorities and there has to be a starting point.

Be patient, and in the mean time wash your hands frequently. Don't cough in people's faces, let alone into your hands: use your sleeve or the crook of your arm. Stay out of acute care facilities. Stay at home if you're only mildly ill, rather than congregating in your local doctor's office or ER. That's a terrific recipe for a rapid transmission of this virus and the foreshadowed epidemic.

Call into the health line for advice if you're unsure. Use common sense. Your children will be fine, more vaccines are on their way.
