A day at the vaccinations
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Telegram
My name is Bob Mercer and I was diagnosed with chronic lymphatic myelemia in 2007.
I was told by my doctors - my family doctor and my hematologist - that I should be vaccinated against the swine flu.
So last Friday, I went down to the school to receive mine.
Long day
I went down about 8:15, only to be told that they weren't starting until noon. I went back home and came back at about 10 minutes to 12.
I couldn't believe my eyes: the crowd started at the entrance to the school and went halfway down the parking lot just a little past the news van that was parked on the side.
There I stood for six hours, moving ever so slowly every now and then.
Longer for others
The crowd began to grow behind me, stretching all the way down the parking lot onto the street.
I got inside the school about a little after six and made my way to the gym.
I got my shot, waited for 15 minutes and went home about 8:15 p.m.

Where is my target group? from St. Johns, Newfoundland writes: Guess you were one of the lucky ones Bob. So many that were not in the target group took from those that are. Those people were the reason for the lines, unless everyone in the province has a chronic illness. Maybe that is the reason that Bingo is in such demand. Not able to work, but able to line up without much trouble. They needed to take from those that really needed this to be able to continue with the Bingo addiction.
Thanks Willie Hunt aka Tax-Dodger

linda from NL writes: Good for you Bob for having the smarts to go on Friday instead of waiting until saturday. God only knows now when others with chronic illness can have their shots. Thanks to people like Willie Hunt who shouldn't have been there in the 1st place. People like him took the vaccines from people who really needed it, like that poor women who passed away on the weekend. Rest well Willie. I really don't know what the government was thinking anyway to depend on the on the honour system!

Frank Blackwood from Richmond Hill, Ontario writes: Taxpayer, you are out of touch with what each and everyone of us look forward to when we have to challenge such a terrible bug as the H1N1 flu. I guess you either have no patience or you are just another one of those online who hide their real identity. People who have the most negative things to say are like superficial ghost hiding behind that white sheet and using a superficial identity. Be proud of your remarks and come out of hiding if you are that intelligent. Are you really that smart?

Tango from NL writes: Let me share a story. My grandparents fell into the high risk group on Friday because of their age and their chronic conditions. They were turned away on Friday! After a phone call they were told (as the knew) that they do fall in the high risk group, and to go back on Saturday to get the shot. Of course the revised high risk group came out Friday evening, and they were once again turned away on Saturday. The system failed them both. I just hope they can get the shot soon!

Richard from NL writes: Due to the shortage of vaccines, despite the federal government's initial declarations of enough for all, and more to give away to needier countries, we now see ours and other provinces changing priority groups every other day in the hope of vaccines being there until the next paltry order is received.

I can see Bob's situation and that of some very elderly ill people being passed over until 'their' priority is reworked.
br

As future challenges come to us would it be fair to think that we are witnessing a modern day rationing of medical care. Think about it, at a cut-off age you may find your care being 'deferred' due to other medical cost priorites.

Larry from NL writes: I find it amazing how confusing people make this. While it is planned that everyone who wishes a vaccine will get it because all 500,000 doses are not available at this time it is being distributed based on priorities. The fact that when the supply changes the priorites change is not a difficult concept to get. I'm sure the Minister and those in his department wish they had all the vaccine available but they don't. Everybody must realize that the vaccine was only approved for use recently and then the company started mass producing. Until that happened there wasn't a supply of vaccine.
In this situation everyone believes that their priority should be higher than the next person. I have heard that if everyone in the province could be vaccinated in two weeks if the supply was here.

Brian Williams from Nain, NL writes: I was a reluctant receiver of the H1N1 vaccination for various reasons. At the 11 hour I decided to go and get the shot.
My hat goes off to the organizers and the delivery crews here on the Labrador coast, and to the receivers of the vaccine whose behavior was exemplary.
AS they always say, Labradorians are the friendliest caring giving people on the face of the earth.
