Flu shot plan a disaster print this article
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The Telegram

You'll get your flu shot - when "swine" fly. This saying of course is when pigs fly. Swine, pig, ham - whatever you want to call it - the public H1N1 flu vaccination plan is nothing short of a disaster. And there is lots of blame to go around.

Let's start with the people who skipped line. You know who you are; the healthy 20, 30, 40 and 50-year-olds who were asked to wait until the more vulnerable in our society were vaccinated. Shame on you!

To the sages at Eastern Health, the purveyors of our health-care service (not the hard working people in our institutions), I ask: have you learned nothing about communications, process, quality assurance and project management from the Cameron Inquiry? Have you learned nothing from the ill-advised and obtuse decisions you were trying to make regarding health services in rural parts of this province? Eastern Health head Vickie Kaminski, you and your managers will be quick to blame the pharmaceutical company who produces the vaccine - however, you had more than enough vials to take care of those greatest at risk in our community.

You failed miserably in assuring that these people were first in line.

Few options here

My husband is one of these people. He has two lung diseases that are so concerning to us that we are travelling to the United States next week, at our own cost, for a second opinion. He intended to line up on Monday to receive this vaccine. But he cannot now as once again Eastern Health has changed the rules. If my husband contracts the H1N1 flu the best scenario is weeks in ICU.

I cannot even think of the worst scenario. For years I have advocated to my American friends the benefit and privilege of our universal health-care system. The irony is if I was an American, today, I could pay $50 and have my husband receive a vaccine for a disease that is a significant threat to his life.

Premier Williams, I have great respect for the Office of the Premier and I understand you are a very successful businessman. Sir, it is time for you to look at Eastern Health as the mismanaged and dysfunctional organization it is and use your business acumen to restore confidence and quality in this system for your fellow citizens.

Taxpayer from NL writes: We should have private clinics here for those of us who work hard and can pay to get our shots immediatly without having to line up behind welfare cases. As for those scumbags in prison, they have no right to vaccines paid for by the taxpayer!

Steve from NL writes: Taxpayer: you are one of the fortunate people. I inquired at Public Health for the shingles vaccine only to be told they didn't have it but the good nurse gave me the name and number of a private clinic. I called, yes we have it and it is $200.00 per shot. I guess I will have to wait.

Jan from NL writes: So all of you healthy people that lined up before you should have, you should feel really good about yourself. Just think...you may very well be the reason a high risk individual, who couldn't get the shot, dies from this. So many selfish people.

Nasty Nate™ © 2009 from St Johns, NL writes: With people such as Tax-Dodger sitting at home collecting social assistance to be able to be on-line 24/7 and getting it's shot out of sequence, no wonder we are in such a mess. Not sure what it will do when those that bring it it's social assistance payments are off with H1N1. I bet it will complain that it has no cash for beer. No worry about Internet access though, it's just jumps onto unsecured hot-spots around town. Where do the rest of us sign up Dodger?

Saucy Face from Nl writes: So what should they do; go to you home instead? Funny, people have no qualms standing in line outside all night to get a ticket to a concert, a Boxing day sale or camping spot but when it comes to lining up for their health all hell breaks loose. Get over yourselves people, we are all in the same boat.

Frank Blackwood from Richmond Hill, Ontario writes: Gee, I would hate to go to a cliinic for the H1N1 injection with such nasty people as you all are. It is very obvious that you have no consideration for those who are trying to do their best to get everyone vaccinated. If there was a shortage of milk on the market people would panic just the same. They would try to steal your bag of milk and run off into the distance. Remember when the cabbage patch dolls came on the market, people fought at the shopping malls to get one so they would not disappoint their kids and themselves. People fight over everything, right or not. After me you come first. Human nature I guess. Frank M. Blackwood It is understandable that people are concerned about this terrible bug, but compassion and respect for others is just as important when it comes to who should receive the vaccine first. We tend to see the bad in people when they cannot get their own way.

Taxpayer from NL writes: I'm not fortunate, Steve I work hard you should try it yourself. As for Nasty, while I agree with your assesment of welfare cases using my money to buy beer, I'm willing to use my money to buy the healthcare I deserve and leave the socialistic cr@p healthcare to the the likes of you.

Larry from NL writes: What Catherina should understand is that there are many in the US that unfortunately are like her husband and do not have the $50 to receive a shot. Eastern Health and the other health authorities for that matter assumed that people will be civil and understand that when doing priority groups you expect people to be honest. Now you want them to be police the system as well which as you might understand is difficult to do. Why is it not the individual citizen who should be responsible for acting appropriately in this situation. We all need to take a collective breath and consider what our system is about. It is about the those with the hghest need getting access first not about those with the most money.
