This is the second H1N1-related death in the central region of the province.
Central Health states the patient had multiple underlying medical conditions and was in the ICU on a ventilator for several days prior to his death.
“It’s very upsetting to find ourselves in this situation again so soon,” said Karen McGrath, chief

“Today, I want to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of this patient.”
Out of respect for the family who are going through a very difficult time and for patient confidentiality reasons, further information with respect to the patient cannot be released.

Nasty Nate™ © 2009 from St Johns, NL writes: Why did the province not purchase enough vaccine in June when it was being shipped out of the country? Why has our money not been used to save lives?
This is only going to get worse, and we will remember it come 2011.

Bones II from nl writes: Nate and G: Come 2011, who will you vote for to ensure this never happens again? Are you both aware that the contract to produce the vaccine was awarded to a single company that is unable to manufacture the agreed amount in a timely manner? Is this a factor to either of you that should be paid attention?

Tom from NL writes: My condolences to the family.
For all the people that are fooled by the media making this out to be more than it really is, you need to learn to research. Do some searching on the internet and you would see that this h1n1 is no more deadly than any other flu. The common flu effects very young children, seniors, and anybody that has an under lying medical condition. Baased on the Center for Disease Control and Preventions in 2007-2008 h1n1 made up 71 % of all tested and confirmed flu in the US, while 29 % of the rest of confirmed flu cases were the common flu. The deaths caused by the flu were slightly higher that year, but were similar to the 2004-2005 season.
So why has the media gone nuts over h1n1 this time, when 2 years ago h1n1 made up 71 % of all flu cases in the US and we never heard a word about it. The media always takes a simple concern story and runs the crap out of it for no reason, other than there are too many dumb people that will tune in and boost their ratings.

The last word from NL writes: To the first two commenters: I believe it is the federal gov't that is responsible for the amount of vaccine that each province has received so far.

Jerome from BC writes: It's still dribble, mostly. The Fed's are responsible for securing the manufacturer, ordering, paying and distributing. Province doles it out. The manufacturer (who's ownership has changed hands 3x since bird flu scare) indicated this summer that their production rate (growth of vaccine) would be at %80 / in reality it's at about %28, hence the shortage. If you want to blame anyone you can blame the Fed's for not releasing the vaccine they had in August as opposed to now - the midst of the first wave and not setting defined regulations around distribution for the provincial bodies.

Right_Decision from NL writes: It's always tragic when somebody looses their life. However, the media attention given to this flu is unreal. Last year in the US (only stats I've seen) 200 people PER WEEK died from complications due to the flu and out of that 34 PER WEEK were children....how many of those did we hear about?
Nate. The reason this is so late coming out isn't because NL didn't buy enough. It's not being produced fast enough. We didn't use it in June because we didn't have enough research done on it. I give my props to Canada for taking the time to study this vaccine before injecting it into our children's arm.
Unless they are a friend or family member, come 2011 the last thing I'll be thinking about is who died from the flu when they had underlying health conditions.
Don't give into the media trying to cause a panic out of this. Remember that this is just the flu. No matter how you look at it, it's still the flu the same run of the mill I'm not feeling too hot, I think I have the flu .
