The Telegram
It's time for round two, and this time, the venue will be the district of Terra Nova. What's interesting is whether the ruling Conservatives change their fight plan.
Wednesday, Premier Danny Williams announced the date of a byelection to fill the seat that former health minister Paul Oram left in early October. The byelection will be held on Nov. 26, one day shy of a month after the Williams Conservatives lost the byelection in the district of The Straits-White Bay North.
Talking about The Straits-White Bay North byelection, Williams has since said that losing it wasn't completely a bad thing, and that the campaign gave him a better understanding of how individual voters in this province view the actions of government.
The Straits was, to put it bluntly, a full-court press. Cabinet ministers were parachuted in by the fistful, traipsing around a district whose name at least one minister couldn't even get right, and there was a lot of reference to the $130 million the Conservative government had either spent or committed to spending in the district.
Williams was blunt, saying there was no comparison between the state of the highway into the district, Route 430, the way it was then and the way it is now. But, Williams said, all that work meant little to the voters. In an interview with The Telegram, Williams also talked about the way even reductions in personal income tax had no traction with voters.
The lesson, Williams said, is that the big things, what you might call the overriding themes in government that make lasting changes for an entire province, have little trickle-down effect at the doors of individual voters.
Those voters want to know what the government is doing for them right now.
Welcome to the bitter reality of politics in Newfoundland and Labrador.
It is something of a cynical take, to be sure, but Williams can be forgiven for feeling that way, especially because he met with The Telegram essentially right after the defeat.
What will be interesting is how the lessons Williams says he learned in The Straits will be applied in Terra Nova. If he's really taken that message to heart, and if he still feels that one more seat to add to his 42-seat caucus is a critical necessity, it won't just be cabinet ministers going door to door. It will be the same old politics of the gravy train: you happen to be the lucky ones with an election in your district, so we'll just back the announcements semi-trailer right up to your door.
Let's hope it isn't.
Politics in this province has to focus on the larger issues and the future if we're ever really going to get out of the cycle of short-term decisions and spending for short-term electoral success.
Williams may be personally frustrated that the big-ticket issues don't get traction in something as insular as a one-seat byelection.
But the fact is his party can afford to lose another seat and still have a large enough stranglehold on power to satisfy almost anyone.
If winning means going back to old-school politics, then the price of winning is too high.

As an outsider living here for now I can see a comparison between your Premier and one of our past Presidents the one and only Richard M. Nixon. Remember his now infamous words, TRUST ME ? Well I didnt really didnt trust him either. If you ever want a real job Mr Bones look me up on the internet. People with such devotion as you appear to have for Premier Williams are hard to come by these days. I am quite sure he is very proud of you. You just need to not let your emotions take over so much and cause you to rant and rave and hurl insults in every direction just because people fail to agree with you. You know what? My last statement just described your Premier. Makes one wonder what the connection really is between you and him. Sometimes things are better left unknown. So you think what Mr Best had to say was long and boring do you? Well I bet you read every word and it forced you to amuse us yet again with your wit and humor. Instead of constantly bashing a man who is only trying to do something for his province, why don't you extoll the virtues of your leader Ms. Jones? Don't you think you would garner more support for your cause if you posted more about how wonderful and intelligent and well spoken she is, instead of constantly comming on this site to bash the Premier? Could it be that you know how utterly useless she is? So all you have left is to try to degrade a good man?

My comments started out as just what you would like to see from me; I tried sensible comments, I tried to incite a little debate, I was interested in what others thought of situation and I asked just that. My comments were immediately met with the harshest criticisms, the most childish names I've ever been called, and rants that make mine look petty in comparison - hurling words around like dictator, king, tyrant, and the like does incredible injustice to real victims of such people all over the world. Using them in the same sentence with dumb, stupid, worshiper, and the like is a direct insult to me. I haven't seen you call anyone out on that yet? . I've since come to the conclusion that my time is wasted asking or attempting to debate an issue or attempting to learn what others think of it, and why. I usually state what I think in a blunt manner, and lately, will include something to bait an uninformed hater. lol Comments of mine that are based in fact are usually dismissed by those I've come to call haters, simply because their comments lack any of the components you so desperately want to see from me (and you haven't called any of those people out for the same thing either) such as respect, sensible debate, discussion or issue in the article being commented on, you know, silly little things like that, lol. Any replies directly to me are usually hatred ridden garbage, complete with insults to just about every part of me, from my career to my intelligence, to the time I spend online. Seldom do they rebuke what I've said or introduce an alternative way to consider the issue. I would be quite willing to discuss, debate, consider, or even hear from those opposed to my views in the same sensible manner you would like to see from me. To date, I haven't been fortunate enough to attain that and, despite altering my tactic on several occasions, my comments are met with the same original condescension as when my first post was made. Until that changes, haters will get from me exactly what they give me. At this point in time, I can't really see any other method they can understand, but insulting them seems to provoke a response, lol. Go figure. Having said all that, I DO appreciate parts of your post and I can appreciate why you would wonder about the things you do. You're borderline hater to me already by assuming my profession, my devotion, or my time spent here. None of these things matter to the issues and serve no other purpose than to belittle me or my opinion. I've said a number of times that I don't work for government, I am employed in the private sector, I've never met Danny, and I probably never will. I'm virtually connected to the internet via my pocket device and that not abnormal this day and age. Most people will take that for what it's worth and personally, I know it to be true I also understand that there is no purpose, point, or ultimate achievement to be acquired by my lying and I realize that you obviously think I am to make your assumptions. Are there facts I've posted that you disagree with? Could we talk about those? Do you have a point you would like to make on the issue and discuss that or are you content with the status quo as long as I stop posting here?
Should any of my comments require clarity, ask me in a sensible manner and I will be happy to explain why I think the way I do. I enjoy such discussions and I'm not afraid to change my mind for a good reason. I might be an idiot, I might be stupid, I might have my head so far somewhere that I don't know any better, I might worship, I might disagree with terms like dictator and tyrant, I most certainly have taken a more rude approach to the childish comments directed at me, but I won't go away and I'll continue to be rude to haters as long as they continue hating, or until the Telegram bans me. The star wars stuff was supposed to be funny. I apologize if I confused you. I AM kind of childish, and I do like to try and have a little fun or a little laugh each and every day. I consider it important to my overall health. I assumed Graham had a little bit of a sense of humor, but I hadn't considered someone else reading my post and using it to conclude I was childish. Again, apologies.
ABCD: For the record, I do not, and never have though you or any other hater was literally retarded. I was referring to your comments and how out of touch they are. Thank you for helping me illustrate the desperation of haters, by taking my words out of context and applying them to things they were never intended when written - in this particular case, individual people such as yourself. If you are seriously insinuating that intelligent people are incapable of making retarded comments, or that retarded comments are reserved for retarded people only, then you must be retarded, lol. I understand that you hate what the man is doing and this is a direct cause for your retarded comments. If the Atlantic Accord is the sum total in the plus column lets take a look at the minus column. One quarter of the $2b amount lost in the stock market, Stephenville paper mill closed, Grand Falls paper mill closed, Corner Brook pulp and paper layoffs and in trouble, millions lost in transfer payments thanks to a finance minister who can't read terms and conditions. Not exactely a stellar performance. If you want to add to the plus list the latest oil deal that's fine, although it will be years before we see one cent from it.

Bones II from nl writes: George: A little perspective, please. Pulp and paper industry all over the world is in decline. How would NL or any government of an equally small place combat that? One quarter of the 2 billion lost on the stock market is hardly ignorable at all, but taken in perspective with the global state of such investments, our particular loss could easily be considered chump change if you'd view it in context with the total losses recorded in the same market. It's difficult to show you what you ask because the examples you've asked for clarity on have been instigated, affected, and ultimately, dealt their blows by a global anomaly under control by no government in any country. Every county's economy has been tainted by the global recession and a look around the world would confirm the dire straights of the pulp and paper industry. You drive George? Pay Insurance? Pay personal taxes? That put any money back in your pocket over the course of a year? Not a lot, but not ignorable either, if you really would like to consider such things in perspective. Any thoughts to the expropriation of certain assets, thereby preventing the sale outside the province? Could Hydro Quebec have been an interested party? Hmmmm.
Here is a list of the PC achievements to date - http://www.pcparty.nf.net/record.htm - Allowing, of course, for duplicates and re-announcements, could you please point out the particular items that indicate lies or corruption, are tyrannical or inaccurate? You can compile your own half-list from these to only include the worst of what you see, if you like, and we can debate it from there, k?
Harold: Yeah, that's why, lol (rolling my eyes) You must have missed the post where my self employment in the private sector dealing with the public on a daily basis was my reason for remaining anonymous? Well, that and the recent comments from some well known haters who practically have me convinced that I'll be looked for once I'm outed, even though it has no use and would serve no useful purpose. I agree with BigBrother because it's obtuse to think anyone is truly anonymous online. Do you not believe that, or do you agree with it? lol Your comments, my friend, are a perfect example of why I say the things I do. Haters understand nothing but insults and negativity. Unless of course you support Harper who couldn't give a fiddler's fig about NL, its seal hunt, its fishery (see NAFO) etc. Don't be blinded by Harper's Canada's Economic Action Plan billboards...it is yours and your children's tax dollars at work. Before you continue to trash Mr. Williams understand that world markets in metals, pulp, paper, and oil are beyond his control...but the trickle down economics is left for him to balance. To-date he has performed quite well with the hand he holds on behalf of NL.

STOP THE RACKET STOP DANNY WILLIAMS from NL writes: Leave Bones alone people. He must be on a new medication and it needs time to kick in. If he has nothing better to do with his life than bow down and worship Danny Williams let him do exactly that. It keeps him out of trouble and gives us something else to complain about. Bones is not the problem Danny Williams is. Theres where we need to put our efforts. Ignore Bones and he will eventually crawl back under whatever rock he came out from in the first place.

My devotion is to my home province and its people, myself included, our grandchildren included. I just happen to support Williams too, and I will support any premier of any stripe that produces results that could be considered progressive. Well here's a news flash for YOU buddy, lol, I know I'm small, lol, it's the haters who have themselves convinced I actually matter to someone in the confederation building, lol. .........And thank you for illustrating how sensible debate is impossible here. To me it's just a form to let people know what you think or what they think the way that Danny is governing our beautiful province . I'm a senior citizen and i never collected U.I . or E.I. as the call it today and was never on welfare ,thanks be the God for that much.I have 2 children and 1 grandchild who i think the world of . I've worked in 4 provinces of Canada so have one of my daughters ,and I can tell you from my experience that the rest of Canada envies us and the way that Danny Williams is governing our beautiful province of NEWFOUNDLAND and Labrador. The peple that are so negative about N.L. should do what my family had to leave N.L.and go away .

Bones II from nl writes: Gaffer:I'd have to agree with you there, but I'd like to add that sometimes I really wonder why more supporters don't take a few minutes to fill a comment thread with messages of real support to balance the ridiculous claims from those I've come to call haters. I know many are very busy people, but I also know the telegram has a large online readership. We might actually turn the Telegram into exactly what it claims to be if we really try - The People's paper.
Your comments are refreshing and should strike a real chord with anyone - and there are many of us out there - that had to leave our beautiful province to prosper. It's our collective love of our province and our people that make us who we are and having a political representative that shares that is very rare. The envy is understandable, from other provinces, but I also think many critics see a side to our premier that they have great difficulty understanding, and therefor, duplicating. I know there has to be tons of supporters out there and a simple 'hear, hear' from a few or four dozen of them would drive my hater buddies insane, lol.
