City council gets itself a raise print this article
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The Telegram

Did you know St. John's city councillors received a one per cent pay increase on Oct. 12?

This increase was originally tabled by council at the April 13, 2009 meeting when it approved a two per cent salary increase effective Oct. 13, 2008 and the above increase scheduled for this year.

Might have said something

In the spirit of openness and transparency, council should have announced receipt of this latest increase at their Oct. 12 council meeting.

Public announcement of this latest salary increase is eerily similar to how we found out about the provincial MHAs receiving their eight per cent increase.

Council has to improve its communication with citizens.

I look forward to Mayor Dennis O'Keefe acknowledging this salary increase at the next council meeting.

Bones II from nl writes: That's actually kind of amazing when considering the recent report recommending the 8% rollback for MHA's. I maintain that St. John's city council needs our money, wants our money, and will get our money. They are heading for tough financial times, but the public doesn't get to know that yet. Good opportunity to pretend everything is swell, so forward with all raises.

Bob from NL writes: Good to see they can find the $$$ for a raise. I guess the mill rate won't be able to be lowered quite as much now. How can they afford a raise when in all likelihood the 'City' will be over its snow clearing budget sometime in January.

Maxwell from St. John's, NL writes: So much much for the mil rate reduction . . . gotta pay for that raise!!! How about a new initiative . . . provisions in the City of St. John's Act to dump elected officials with an appropriate number of signatures!!

Æ™®© from NL writes: NO ONE should be allowed to vote to give themselves a raise. Guess what the outcome will always be regardless of performance ? They are no better than the Politbureau. (I guess not posting my earlier comment means we are not privy to answers regarding why we can't comment on police actions or crime articles.)

Taxpayer ll from NL writes: Of course they need a raise! They deserve a raise, they work so hard everyday, those poor 'ol counsillors. I almost passed out the first time I heard that the Mayor gets over a hundred grand a year, think about that when they send out your next tax bill. This little burg could be run by a secretary in an office at confederation bldg. What a joke these imbeciels are!
