H1N1 errors - by the numbers print this article

Huddled like cattle at one of two vaccination clinics for high-risk people - outside in November, in the cold elements as directed by our government -is the best our billions in tax dollars can get us in regards to our health during a crisis.

Five points

Point No. 1. No bathrooms, no feeding areas, no sitting, no warmth, with pregnant women having to stand for a interminable wait, to help save two lives - that's the situation our health minister and Eastern Health put us in. Anyone with a bit of common sense can see the flaws in just about every component of the plan.

Point No. 2. Lawbreakers get priority treatment, and our huge stadiums get saved for Royal visits, while we are in a survival-of-the-fittest game, endorsed by government. Prisoners should be the last to get anything. Can we sue government because a criminal got my child's vaccine?

Point No. 3. Eastern Health and our Health Department are not equipped to deal with our health matters. If this were handled any worse, you would have to poke people in line, in the eye, with a stick. Until we wake up to that reality and demand better, we will continue to be treated like sheep, permitting these people to dictate who shall die.

Point No. 4. Jerome Kennedy deviating and blaming line-jumpers and the public. Let's get this point correct, Minister of Health, it was your department and Eastern Health that is to blame for the planning and co-ordination - not the public. While we may be easy targets, it does not lessen the fact that your government dropped the ball - again.

Point No. 5. We should all be more scared and concerned about the ability of our Health Department, and its obvious incompetence to manage such a simple task, than about getting the H1N1 virus. Even in Nova Scotia, they had a plan to vaccinate pregnant women on set dates, offer vaccines at doctors' offices, and better yet, permit employers to get their employees vaccinated at work.

Did the clowns responsible for our health ever consider the added dangers of hundreds of people huddled in tightly packed groups outside in the cold for five to six hours? How many levels of management are to blame for this event? Get your heads out of your backsides and try taking a look around at how others manage to handle large groups of people. Poor planning and a lack of simple organization is embarrassing and disgusting, resulting in compromised high-risk individuals outside in November.

At the very least, you should be able to follow someone else's example. A simple plan could have been high-risk first and foremost, vaccinate children in schools where they are normally done, and utilize a facility that can hold foreseen numbers. What if this was a real full-blown panic?

Joan from NL writes: Well said!!! Why were the criminals vaccinated anyway, they don't have to be in large crowds or deal with the public. They should have been at the end of the list. If they did get sick, they don't have to worry about staying off work and maybe not having enough sick leave. Shame on the government. Meanwhile us working people have to try and pick up the extra work because so many people are off sick while trying to avoid not getting sick ourselves because we haven't been vaccinated yet.

Phoebe Tilley from NL writes: The workers at Tim Hortons especially the drive thru window are exposed to everything under the sun. I hope they are all protected from this. They really should all be wareing latex gloves.

mainlander from on writes: It's not just NLFD. Ontario and Alberta reported similar problems. It's not just Eastern Health that dropped the ball. With all the emergency planning since 9/11 and SARS, I am wondering what they spent time and money on, because no one seemed to be prepared AND they knew it was coming!

Roy Hart from Upper Island Cove, NL writes: Absolutly right. Were prisoners vaccinated first because many of them were Jerome Kennedy's formr clients?

Saucy Face from Nl writes: Maybe, just maybe not mind you, the prisoners were vaccintated to prevent an major outbreak in an overcrowded and outdated facility that could have not only put their lives at risk, but those of everyone who work there and their familes as well as those who have visit the pen on business. These prisoners didn't kill anyone, so they don't deserve the death sentence. BUT, you narrow minded morons out there never had God given sense to see beyond your small minds before shooting your mouthes off.

Joan from NL writes: To saucy face....I am no moron, just a hard working woman trying to make ends meet like alot of other people who are tired and frustrated that we have to try and pick up the slack because alot of our co-workers are off sick due to no fault of their own while waiting patiently for our turn to be vaccinated. Those inmates are where they due to their own fault and are being rewarded with getting their vaccinations before anyone, even the little innocent children.

Bea from Ontario writes: Mr. Penton makes some good points. As I was reading Points 1 and 2 I thought, perhaps it would be more humane (at least warmer with bathroom and sitting needs met, if cities did the vaccination clinics in these huge stadiums he refers to in Point 2. People could sit until their row or section is called to come down to get their needle. Some would argue that there would be too many people in one place and fear of spreading the flu would be a concern, but, so too is the problem with concerts, church, etc. Just a thought.
