Unemployment rate rises to 8.6 per cent in October, as 43,200 jobs lost Breaking News print this article
The Canadian Press—Ottawa

Statistics Canada says the country’s unemployment rate rose two-tenths of a point to 8.6 per cent last month as the struggling economy shed 43,200 jobs.
The job losses were a surprise to economists, who had been expecting a 10,000 gain in October after Canada’s economy added jobs in August and September.
October’s weak result would have been worse without the self-employed. The number of actual employees with jobs in October fell a massive 70,700.
If there was good news, it was a marginal increase in full-time employment. The job losses came in the part-time category.
Statistics Canada says that employment is now down 400,000 jobs, or 2.3 per cent, since a year ago.

The national unemployment rate was 8.6 per cent in October. Here’s what happened provincially (previous month in brackets):
— Newfoundland 17.0 (15.3)
— Prince Edward Island 12.0 (11.8)
— Nova Scotia 9.3 (9.5)
— New Brunswick 8.5 (8.1)
— Quebec 8.5 (8.8)
— Ontario 9.3 (9.2)
— Manitoba 5.8 (5.3)
— Saskatchewan 5.3 (4.6)
— Alberta 7.5 (7.1)
— British Columbia 8.3 (7.4)

Nasty Nate™ © 2009 from St Johns, NL writes: WooHoo!!! Broke that 17% Welfare Rate. Just three more points and we can say for sure more are out of work than working. Gotta love all those jobs Happy Harper and his twin Flipper Williams have created for Canadians and those in this HAVE Province.

So I wonder when people will start to catch on to the fact that the pair of them have lied all this time, or will continue to follow blindly off the cliff?

Taxpayer from NL writes: All this proves is that Newfoundlanders are lazier than other provinces. Stop blaming the economy. Harper is working hard to make Canada the best country in the world, the least these so-called unempolyed could do is put down the beer, get off your butts and start looking for work.

Nasty Nate™ © 2009 from St Johns, NL writes: The economy shed 43,200 jobs. Sorry Tax-Dodger but when jobs are being cut faster then created we have issues. How can you call people lazy when more jobs are lost then created? Guess by being a Tax-Dodger you validate the fact that you can not add either. As long as you get your 12 pack a day I guess you are happy since that's as high as you can count.

STOP THE RACKET STOP DANNY WILLIAMS from NL writes: Great job Premier Williams we have the highest unemployment rate in Canada. Well done sir. No wonder Bones loves you so much it practically gurantees his job is safe for now.

Graham from NL writes: It makes us all so happy to live in a HAVE PROVINCE that actually has the highest unemployment rate in the country. I am starting to see Danny through your eyes Bones my friend. Since his coronation we have become filthy rich with oil money because of deals struck by previous governments both PC and Liberal, we have the worst health care system in the country, we have the highest number of people on welfare in the country, and now the destinction of being the highest unemployed people in the country. Gotta just love that dont ya Bones. How could anyone ever hate a premier with a track record like that. All hail Danny. Form a line behind Bones please and waite for your number to be called.

Taxpayer ll from NL writes: Ha ha ha...Let's take a look at what the provicial rate was when the great liberals were in power, lets see...18% under Tobin wasn't it ?
This province has had the highest rate of unemployment since it became part of the country in '49.

fed up from nl writes: It is very sad that our province has highest unemployment rate . Alot of these lost jobs has put many families in dire situations . But if williams would make some of the healthy, lazy spongers that is on welfare out to earn the money .im sure you would see an increase in employment. I have been in the position for many years where you can't get any one to work for min wage. Ido agree that the wage should be raised to meet the cost of kiving . But danny stop lining the pockets of the lazy and the baby breeders ! Go out to the vlts sometime and see where all that money goes. I do see it ,solve that and make them available to work .

Ev from GF, NL writes: What a negative bunch of Danny haters. Newfoundland has always had high unemployment, we are not a manufacturing province, we produce the raw material for the other provinces, and produce the work force to export to the other provinces to keep their industries going.

Need A Psychiatrist? from NL writes: You Danny lovers and haters need to get a job or find something more useful to do than prowl the comments sections and annoy the rest of us with the foolishness you spew. What's really sad is that some of you use multiple names to pretend you have support for your opinions. Why don't you give us a break for one day.

Frank M from St. John's, NL writes: How will Premier Williams spin us on this one?

Higher unemployment gives employers the opportunity to get over-qualified people into lesser positions at a lower cost which is good business for the business owners!

Where are the tory communications staff on this one?

Fred Miller from St.Johns, nl writes: The fact that NL is an alleged have province with the highest unemployment in the country only goes to show what a perverse society canada really is. As long as other parts of the country add value to our resources and we are not allowed to, we will always have high unemployment. Our best bet to ensure our future is to get rid of Canuckiestan and go it alone. And if anyone thinks we cannot make it on our own are just bigots and the real goofy newfies. Free NL from occupation by Canuckiestan

Heather from Newfoundland writes: Newfounland is in better shape than it has been for years. The increase in the number of unemployed probably relates to the fact that this is the time of year when seasonal employment is winding down. For all the Mr. William bashers - he is a Rhodes Scholar, self-made multi-millionaire - jealous much?
