David Breau, 22, arrested today in St. John’s in connection with a stabbing near Mile One Centre in October, will have a bail hearing on Monday.
Breau has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
Crown and defence lawyers had been prepared to release Breau this afternoon on a $5,000 surety and a $5,000 cash deposit. Judge Robert Hyslop, however, would not agree to release the accused as the person putting forth the surety lives in New Brunswick.
Thus a bail hearing was set for Monday.
The accused was arrested by Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers at his St. John’s home this morning.
At 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, the RNC responded to a reported stabbing near Mile One on New Gower Street in downtown St. John's.
A 38-year-old male bouncer, an employee of the nearby Cotton Club — a gentleman’s showbar, had an altercation with an unknown male after an incident at the club. During the altercation, the unknown male stabbed the club employee. The employee was conveyed to hospital where he was treated for injuries.
The investigation is continuing.
