Remote location hasn't stopped a small clothier in St. John's from hitting the big leagues.
Earlier this year, Bonnie Cook, founder of AbbyShot Clothiers (abbyshot.com), told the Financial Post, "I saw an untapped global market for the many fans of action films, TV hit shows, and popular computer games, who want to dress up like their favourite characters. For them, we make wearable clothing, not just costumes."
Now, AbbyShot Clothiers has announced a licensing agreement with Hollywood's Universal Pictures to create apparel based on the Browncoat worn in "Serenity," a film adaptation of Joss Whedon's TV series "Firefly," with full endorsement from the creators.
Tricia Chaves, senior director, licensing at Universal Partnerships & Licensing says, "After meeting with Ms. Cook and her team, and reviewing AbbyShot's previous designs, we knew fans would be completely satisfied with this partnership."
Cook operated a sewing business from home until 2002, when she branded AbbyShot.
Soon the buzz on her film-inspired apparel spread across MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube.
At the 2007 Licensing Inter-national Expo in New York City, she made contacts with major studios including Universal.
She also recently signed a deal with the British Broadcasting Corp. to release apparel featured in its long-running series "Doctor Who."
The clothing is manufactured in China. The company has six employees and ships orders worldwide.

Rachael from NL writes: I think it's great what you guys are doing! It's great when Newfoundlanders get noticed! I have a small business myself and recently had to start getting product made off shore. It sucks that we have to do that, but there is really no way to compete otherwise. No one wants to get things manufactured in China, but sometimes there is no other choice. BE PROUD!!!! WE ARE!!!

Donna from NL writes: I agree with Jackie B. Manufactured in China does not invoke pride. Despite that, I wish AbbyShot all the best, and hopefully a local manufacturer can be found.

Production is not only about sewing, it’s about business.
I am SO PROUD of my employees and they are very proud of their accomplishments!
Take me up on a visit, Jackie…you just might be proud too. ?

Bill from St. John's, NL writes: Way to go Abbyshot!
We live in a world where supply chains are global. If Abbyshot can do the designs here, the marketing here, run their website here, manage their branding here, develop their licencing deals here, and grow their business here, that's what is important.
Most NL companies can't compete with the Asians on production cost (nor should we), but the real money and the real value for the province is in all the rest of running the business.
Good on ya!
