Dalhousie Tigers handed Memorial Sea-Hawks their first loss of the season with a 70-67 win Sunday in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women's basketball in Halifax.

"We did what we've been doing all year which is play with fire," said MUN coach Doug Partridge. "This time it burned us."

Vicki Thistle led Memorial with 17 points. Ally Forsey scored 15 and Brittany Dalton chipped in with 14 points and four rebounds for the Sea-Hawks who went into the weekend ranked ninth in the country. Erin Mullaley had seven points.

"We just weren't efficient with the ball," said Partridge. "We were not taking care of the basketball. We weren't getting good possessions.

"It was close throughout,' Partridge noted. "Dal was up four or five points throughout the game. We got to within one in the fourth quarter, but we couldn't get the big rebounds that we needed."

Cailin Crosby was tops for Dal with 17 points.

The Lady Hawks (3-1) won 68-63 Saturday after trailing 28-26 at the half.

Individual player statistics for Saturday's game were unavailable.

MUN plays host to Saint Mary's Huskies next weekend.

MUN MEN

Dalhousie Tigers handed Memorial men their fourth straight loss of the season with a 96-81 win over the Sea-Hawks Sunday in AUS play in Halifax.

Despite the two loses MUN coach Peter Benoite said he felt his team played well in both games with the exception of the third quarter in Saturday's game.

"If we play well we can play with any team in our conference. Dal are one of the top teams in the country," Benoite said.

"We were up 44-40 at the half today (Sunday), so we had control," noted Benoite. "We were up by a few points in the third quarter but we had some mental lapses...just little detail stuff we didn't take care of. We got frustrated at certain times and we were unable to get a key turnover that would have kept us in the game. Because we didn't do that, it allowed them to keep the momentum," Benoite said.

Benoite singled out a few players for praise.

"Robbie Habib played a great game for us (Sunday) and Jason (Shepherd) played well, too," the MUN coach said. "Another bright spot was the play of Mike Quigley who knocked down three threes right off the bench in the third quarter."

Shepherd was tops for MUN with 18 points and six rebounds. Habib had 17 points and Quigley scored 13. Rookie Mike Helsby netted 12 points with six assists for the Sea-Hawks.

Simon Farine led Dal with a game-high 28 points.

"We didn't play him tough enough," said Benoite about the Dal star guard who netted 21 points in Saturday's game. "He's on of the best players in the country."

Dalhousie outscored MUN 25-7 in the third quarter on the way to an 83-62 win Saturday. MUN led 32-28 at the half.

Memorial plays at home to Saint Mary's next weekend at the Field House.
