Government shirking responsibility for Team Gushue Highway costs: Opposition
The Telegram
Roland Butler says a dispute between two cities is not helping resolve how operational and maintenance costs will be paid for the planned extension to Team Gushue Highway.
The Opposition transportation critic alleges the provincial government is trying to download the costs to the municipalities which is causing undue stress on residents of St. John’s, Mount Pearl and surrounding communities.
According to a news release, Butler said St. John’s and Mount Pearl are in a public dispute regarding how annual operational costs for the new highway will be paid when it opens in 2011.
He said Mount Pearl claims it is a provincial highway and the provincial government should cover the costs. St. John’s, he noted, is threatening toll booths if other solutions cannot be found.
“The provincial government should not be allowed to download their responsibility to municipalities through veiled threats of not constructing the road if annual maintenance costs are not covered by residents of both cities,” Butler said.
“This road is a key piece of infrastructure in the capital region and the provincial government should not only build, but also maintain the highway.”

Brian from NL writes: Right on Roland. AS for Doc. O Keefe, the keeper of the city, guess with the toll both everyone will have to keep a roll of loonies!!
in there car. Then look out for the petty theives breaking into cars all night long. The
RNC can't keep up with it. Or, we will line up and use debit card. Also, with all the residents
entering Mount Pearl to shop at wal mart, maybe Mt. Pearl should resort to toll booths.
Well i for one suggest the province put in the highway and maintain it. AS for Doc and his toll booth, get a life you got enough
problems to look after

Pat Leary from Mount Pearl, NL writes: Mount Pearl should hold fast on this issue. Next thing you know they will want us to pay for part of the Outer Ring Road. Well, as the argument goes, the city benefits from it. So does the towns of Deer Lake or Corner Brook pay for the roads that they benefit from. I think not. Just another example of how the City of St. John's is run by dingbats not willing to take a stand. There is some backdoor work here for sure that the public is not privvy to.

David Wilson from NL writes: Simple solution, if Mount Pearl doesn't want to pay their fair share, the NL Government reduce the amount of Capital Projects they cost share and add that funding to the Capital Project cost sharing it does with St. John's. The other solution would be amalgamation. And we all know this is coming sooner than later.

Bob Hefferton from Indian Harbour Beach, Florida writes: The idea of a toll road is a good one !
Having travelled in many places throughout the World, where toll roads exist, while citizens expressed concerns at the begining, in later years, the improved highway systems made for a better place to live and commute easily.
As a Canadian, now living in Florida for the winter, we use the E-Z-Pass system at the various tolls. It is very efficient, and a great highway system .
I should think , if approached properly, the Federal, Provincial, Municipal and , yes, private industry, could come up with a workable plan .
While I reckonoze the competitiveness between St. John's and Mt. Pearl is real, think what can be accomplished by working together ?
Finally, don't forget, that the rest of the Province's travelling public will help to pay for the cost of this enterprise, and rightly so, as they use the services of the twin Cities.
Very best wishes in your deliberations.
