Marine Atlantic report hopefully will lead to action, not fee increases: Opposition
The Telegram
The federal auditor general’s special report on Marine Atlantic confirms many problems the people of the southwest coast have highlighted over the past number of years, says Kelvin Parsons, Liberal MHA for the District of Burgeo-Lapoile.
The report into the operations of Marine Atlantic by the Auditor General of Canada looks at the financial and management operations of the Crown corporation, and examines corporate governance, strategic and operational planning, safety and security, human resource management, operations and capital asset management during a specific period of time.
The report, which contains 13 recommendations, covers a five-year period up to March 2009. It outlines two key problems with the operations, including the aging fleet and other assets. The second is operational planning and capital asset management.
“I agree with most of the recommendations in this report, except for potentially increasing the rates to recover more on the cost of supplying this service,” Parsons said in a news release. “Everyone recognizes that the current vessel fleet and local infrastructure in Port aux Basques must be upgraded. I am pleased that the auditor general recognized that the federal government must provide a more significant investment, but I don’t think ferry users should have to pay for the years of neglect shown to us by Ottawa.
“This vital link to our province is a necessity and a constitutional requirement of the federal government. As Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, we deserve a first-class reliable service that is cost-effective and not an obstacle for travel. Currently, the service is a disincentive for tourists and residents wanting to travel and this must change. Excessive costs must also be addressed so tourists and residents of the province are able to access an affordable transportation system in commuting to and from the province.”

Florence from Ontario writes: Since I am tired of complaining to the 'Powers that be ' about the lack of security on the ferry boats to NL, I ask you this. Am I the only one concerned ?
People look at me like I have rocks in my head when I tell them there is not one smidgen of security when people board these boats. Their first reaction is, ' Well it's not the same as an airport.' Hello !!! These are people we're talking about here. There are no sniffing dogs, no wands, and not even a question asked other than, on your return to NS, as to weather or not you are carrying any potatoes or other vegetables !!! When you get to the ferry you hand them your reservations and that's that.
There are approximately a thousand people on board each of these ferries and about 300 vehicles, any one of which could be loaded with dynamite, and there is not one person checking. What's it going to take ? Another 911 ?
Yet all everyone is concerned about is the price of fares going up. I too am concerned about that but first things first I say.
Most of the people on those ferries are Newfoundlanders and it seems like, in the eyes of the Federal Government, they don't matter.
And Newfoundlanders are sitting back and not even noticing, much less questioning the lack of security.
Wake up people. Or are you waiting for the Boom! For the love of God smarten up and demand you be treated like first class citizens.
Please, before it's too late.

don from Newfoundland and Labrador writes: Kelvin Parsons is a bit out of touch on this one. If the Federal Government is forced to spend 1 or 2 billion dollars to upgrade the Newfoundland and Labrador cattle boat service to a slightly better cattle boat service, you can bet that fee increases and rate hikes will be on the agenda. Eventually, the Marine Atlantic Ferry service will be so expensive that only the rich tourists will be able to afford to use it. Since most of the rich tourists travel to islands like Cuba and Hawaii and not Newfoundland, I don't think there will be many of them on the Marine Atlantic Ferry. The residents of Newfoundland and Labrador and the truck drivers who must use the cattle boats to get on or off the Rock will have to pay the piper. So, get used to fee increases, rate hikes, fuel surcharges, expensive meals, expensive cabins, higher priced beer and rum in the lounge and more rubber chicken and veggies in the cafeteria at $12.50 a pop! There is some consolation, all of the new cattle boats will probably be like the Atlantic Vision and will probably be on time more often.
