Man charged with impaired after vehicle found driving in wrong direction

A 67-year-old man was charged Saturday with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, having a breathlyzer reading of over 80 mg. of alcohol and driving without due care and attention, following a complaint of a vehicle travelling west on the Trans-Canada Highway in the east bound lane between the Veterans Memorial Highway and Whitbourne.
According to Whitbourne RCMP, the complaint was received around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and members located the vehicle as it approached Whitbourne, still traveling in he wrong direction on the divided highway. The driver indicated that he didn’t know he was driving in the wrong direction and was subsequently arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
While investigating the matter, RCMP members were called to an accident scene a few kilometers east on Trans-Canada Highway. The driver of this vehicle said she was forced leave the road to avoid colliding with a west bound vehicle. The woman was treated in hospital and released.
The man was later released from police custody on a promise to appear in St. John’s Provincial court.
