Tournament MVP Zach O’Brien scored twice and collected two assists as the St. John’s Fog Devils humbled the Charlottetown, P.E.I. Islanders 8-2 in the final to win the major midget division at the 29th Monctonian AAA Challenge midget hockey tournament Sunday in Moncton, N.B.
The Monctonian, a heavily-scouted tournament by junior and college bird dogs, attracted 44 teams and some 900 players in the major and AAA midget divisions.
It’s the second title in four years for the Fog Devils, winners of the past eight Newfoundland and Labrador major midget championships.
St. John’s is 11-0 on the year in provincial play, and went unbeaten in Moncton, winning its three round-robin games and adding three more playoff victories.
O’Brien is the provincial midget league’s leading scorer. His junior rights are held by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
Lindstrom, Bray award-winners, too
Nick Lindstrom, the tournament’s most sportsmanlike player, had two goals and an assist in the championship game. Danny Wicks, Marcus Power, Mike Abbott and Mike Cole also scored for the Fog Devils. Rod Mahoney had two assists.
Scott Bray, named the tournament’s top goalie, registered the win.
The Fog Devils reached the final with a 7-2 semifinal win over Moncton. O’Brien had two goals in that game, with Danny Phillips, Trevor Forward, Connor Donaghey, Power and Cole adding single markers. Mahoney had three assists and Cody Squires had two helpers.
Scott Walsh got the win.
In their cross-over game, St. John’s beat Dartmouth 8-1 behind O’Brien’s three goals. Power had a goal and two assists and Cole, Phillips, Justin Walsh and Andrew Sullivan each scored once.
Bray registered the victory.
The two other major midget entries from this province — the Tri-Pen Frost and Central IcePak— each went 0-3.
In the midget minor division, the Defenders and Arbitrators of the St. John’s-based Doug Marshall Hockey League each finished 1-1. The Misdemeanors of the same league were 0-1-1.
