Stranglehold is wrong
LETTER TO THE EDITOR The Telegram
Premier Danny Williams should be congratulated for taking the Hydro-Quebec takeover of NB Power to the heart of the business district in New York.
We have to wonder, as Canadians, if our federal Constitution is being ignored again by the provincial government of Quebec.
The Quebecois' constant fight for increased political clout in Ottawa just got a major boost. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservatives stood by and l watched Quebec put another stranglehold on Newfoundland.
This irrational behaviour is, according to my understanding of our federal Constitution, against the general welfare of the federation of our 10 provinces as a whole. It is blatant strangulation of another province's attempt to develop its valuable natural resources for the benefit of all. It is gun-to-the-head diplomacy.
Williams should take his argument of unfair monopoly of hydro power to the courts, right up to the Supreme Court, to affirm Newfoundland's position.
Quebec's ignorance (intentional or otherwise) of the terms of Confederation is dangerous. The fact that Harper doesn't seem to care is even more dangerous.
Bill Westcott

Taxpayer ll from NL writes: No, you don't have to wonder. I call it the Ottawa/Quebec coalition.Harper needs the seats in Quebec so badly he will do just about anything to get them. The feds, no matter who is in, will always cowtow to the French, they supposedly have us over a barrel. What a setup they have...give us what we want or we'll take our ball and go home...
That is why the U.S. system is so superior to ours. Each State, no matter if its California with 36 million plus, or Rhode Island with a few hundred thousand, they have equal representation. That is what we need here in Canada, a true elected senate, with a vote from every Province.

Sarah from Nfld writes: I could not agree more with Bill Wescott. France is alive and well in Nfld and Canada and they will advance on us again and take what they can, however they can, if we allow them. We had to fight for our rights in this province in the past against France and we will continue to fight for and defend what is ours against France or Canadian French (same thing almost). This includes any rights of ours in Nfld and Labrador!!!!! With or without the Federal Government. We had Great Britain to assist in defending us in previous battles. We know the Cdn government will not defend our rights now. That is the difference between Confederation and non-Confederation in my books. Nfld and Labrador still has to think Independent, even if we are not and joined with Canada by the hip now. We have to look after ourselves and not let anyone rip us off anymore as well. As with the Joey hydro deal in Lab with Quebec. Terrible deal that they will try and keep even if they bring out the soldiers I am sure. France has done that before on Nfld soil. Go Danny and do not allow Nfld to be bullied by the more powerful just because we have little or no defense left! We will not be bullied by anyone not matter how our circumstances have changed historically. France can put up a brutal fight against us little guys as they have in the past
