Terry French is the province’s newest cabinet minister, being appointed to the portfolio of Tourism, Culture and Recreation during a swearing-in ceremony today at Government House in St. John’s.
Former tourism minister Clyde Jackman has been shuffled in as Minister of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, while former fisheries minister Tom Hedderson has been moved to fill the vacant position of Minister of Transportation and Works.
“I welcome these ministers to their new portfolios. In particular, I welcome Minister French as our newest addition to the cabinet,” Premier Danny Williams said.
“I have every confidence that the experience of these individuals will greatly benefit the people of the province.”
The transportation portfolio was left vacant in October with the resignation of then minister Trevor Taylor.
Williams indicated following the Thursday night byelection in the district of Terra Nova that he would have a transportation and works minister in place before the House of Assembly opened on Monday.
In addition, Williams also announced the following appointments: Keith Hutchings has been appointed parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Health and Community Services; and Wallace Young has been appointed parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.
“I thank Mr. Hutchings and Mr. Young for taking on these new responsibilities,” Williams said. “They are both extremely effective and capable representatives in the House of Assembly and I know they will be equally effective in their new capacities.”
