| Cleanup and repairs were the order of the day Monday in the harbour of Quidi Vidi Village. Huge waves and high water levels from the weekend storm damaged and destroyed several structures along the shore. - Photo by Gary Hebbard/The Telegram |

While some of the damage caused by storm surges and high winds over the weekend in Quidi Vidi Village and the Outer Battery may not fall within the jurisdiction of the City of St. John's, Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff believes the city has a role to play in bringing agencies together to address the situation.
Duff and Ward 2 Coun. Frank Galgay visited the two areas Sunday to assess damage caused by the storm to fishing wharves and sheds. (more)

Murder charges against officer leave military community reeling
The Canadian military was rocked to its core Monday following the bombshell allegation that the colonel in command of the country's largest air force base had killed two women and sexually assaulted two others.
Col. Russell Williams, a 46-year-old career member of the Canadian Forces, was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville, and Marie France Comeau, a 38-year-old corporal with CFB Trenton's 437 squadron who was killed last November. (more)

It's their move 13
The province's constituency allowance scandal came into being because the former Liberal government - with the support of the Conservatives - removed an officer of the House of Assembly, thereby preventing that person from reviewing what they were doing.
They forced the auditor general out of the House of Assembly's account books.
Now, a court action has removed another officer of the House from reviewing material that used to be part of his job, and has made the government itself the arbiter of whether or not it is acting properly. (more)

The final countdown
It's an exciting time for Consolidated Thompson (CLM) as the mining company gets ready to put its new world-class iron ore mine into full operation.
The Bloom Lake iron ore deposit, located in Quebec two miles south of the Quebec-Labrador border, is expected to have its first shipment of ore rolling down its new $100-million rail line some time between the end of February and the middle of March. (more)

Gainey defined team-first mentality 3
The new-team smell had faded by early 2003 when George Gillett Jr., by then two years the majority owner of the Montreal Canadiens, met Bob Gainey for the first time.
It was at a restaurant dinner in Vail, Colo., attended by Gillett's wife, Rose, and three of the couple's four sons. The hosts planned to talk hockey with their guest, having heard excellent reviews about Gainey as a potential general manager for the Canadiens. (more)

Ziplining in paradise
You stare straight ahead of you, feeling the sweat break out all over your body - a sweat brought on not only by the heat, but also by nerves and anticipation.
You are perched on a platform mounted in a treetop too many feet above the ground to think about. Your field of vision presents you with lush vegetation, blue sky and a gorge that you know has a bottom only because you can hear the roaring river lost in the undergrowth way below. Barely visible on the other side of this chasm is another platform similar to the one you now occupy. It is your destination. (more)

Swimming with the sharks - Russell Wangersky 4
Two Type A businessmen on the plane, Thursday night and heading home, and they have duelling cellphone battles on the go, one in the row behind you, window seat 8A, the other in the aisle one row up, 6D, and it's suppertime. A short-hop Dash-8, and the doors are already closed, but they'll use their phones to the very last second, damn it, and don't you try to stop them.
And they don't care who hears, because they're doing their own business and it doesn't matter if bits of their conversation are thrown all over the plane, because it's the anonymity of happenstance air travel, sharing the plane with 30 faces you'll see once and never again. (more)

Photo was inappropriate 28
I'm writing to express my disgust and disbelief over the photo chosen for the Telegram's front page on Feb. 3. This photo, taken by Joe Gibbons, shows a firefighter in the doorway of a home with a man covered in a blanket at his feet. It is obvious that this man has passed away.
This man belonged to someone. This man was a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, a father, a friend. I believe it was horribly disrespectful of your paper to publish such a photo. Disrespectful of the deceased and, of course, his family. (more)
