To seek Liberal party nomination in St. John’s North

An outspoken critic of the provincial government and advisor to former Liberal premiers Clyde Wells and Roger Grimes will seek the Liberal party’s nomination in St. John’s North for the Oct. 9 provincial general election.
Simon Lono said people in the district deserve strong, vigorous representation, something he says hasn’t been delivered by Tory backbencher Bob Ridgley.
“We have too many silent, passive members sitting on the government side of the House,” he said.
“This government has taken St. John’s North for granted and it shows.”
Lono said he is concerned about the direction Premier Danny Williams is taking the province, and highlighted issues such as elder care, education, the economy, and the decision to give Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook more autonomy.
He also criticized Williams for offering “mere crumbs of information” on a tentative agreement to develop the Hebron-Ben Nevis offshore oil field.
“Secret deals are not acceptable,” he said.
Lono ran unsuccessfully in the September 2005 St. John’s municipal election for the position of councillor-at-large.

Friday at noon is the deadline for Liberal nominations in four districts: St. John’s North, Carbonear-Harbour Grace, Grand Bank and Mount Pearl North.
