Message lost in 'fuehrer' furor
The Telegram
My unintentional slipping of the word "fuehrer" into a recent political event was inappropriate and never intended to associate the premier with a mad man. I regret using the word, but some balance and accuracy is required.
The media, in particular CBC Radio, repeatedly played a sound bite; other media joined in, with the attempt to stir public emotions during a rather dull campaign.
Every message and idea expressed at the rally was ignored.
Fortunately, the public did not bite, probably seeing the satirical context. The word "Hitler" was never used by me, but others used it for political gain. I used the "f" word as a synonym for leader and nothing more.
I wonder whether the nouns "Stalin," "Czar" and "Mao" - not your average Sunday school teachers - would have received the same play.
I realize the media is always looking for a statement or action during political events, and sometimes that is unfortunate as well.
Views on broken promises, elimination of services, strong representation, rural survival and basic freedoms were given little coverage.
