The St. John’s Fog Devils opened the back end of their lengthy six-game road trip with a win Thursday night in Moncton, N.B.
Olivier Guilbault’s second goal of the game, at 7:34 of the third period, stood as the winner as the Fog Devils shaded the homestanding Wildcats 3-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League play at the Coliseum.
Rocket up next
St. John’s heads to Charlottetown today for a game against the P.E.I. Rocket and their new coach, Guy Chouinard, today before closing out the trip Saturday in Saint John, N.B. against the Sea Dogs.
The Fog Devils opened the road swing last Wednesday in P.E.I., but had been holed up in Moncton the past four days where they had been skating and, for those taking classes, working with tutors.
Last night’s game was a tussle of clubs with identical 6-8-1-1 records.
Mario Kempe also scored for the visitors. Randy Cameron and Matt Marquardt had the Moncton goals.
St. John’s got off to a quick start when Guilbault scored an unassisted goal, his sixth on the year, 1:49 into the game.
Kempe made it 2-0 at 10:18, finishing off a play with T.J. Brennan and Pat O’Keefe as St. John’s went into the first-period intermission up 2-0.
However, the Wildcats evened the game in the second with power play goals less than two minutes apart.
The game stood 2-2 until Guilbault beat Moncton goalie Nicola Riopet for the game-winner in the third. St. John’s managed only 23 shots at Riopet.
Timo Pielmeier was much busier at the other end of the ice, turning aside 37 Moncton shots to earn third-star honours. Guilbault was the first star.
