More than 250 music students from St. Edward’s School in Conception Bay South, St. Paul’s Junior High School in St. John’s and Brookside Intermediate of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, congregated at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall in the MUN School of Music on Thursday (Feb. 8) morning to participate in the Sing-In/Play-In event as part of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra’s (NSO) “Chevron Symphony Goes to School … and Beyond” program.
With the help of school rehearsals prior to Thursday’s event, the students played a special arrangement of the “Ode to Joy” theme from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony complete with choir and a variety of instruments (arranged by Timothy Brennan).
Accompanying the students was the NSO’s Atlantic String Quartet (ASQ), consisting of Heather Kao (concertmaster, and principal violin), Nancy Case-Oates (principal second violin), Kate Read (principal viola) and Theo Weber (principal cello).
Marc David, music director and principal conductor of the NSO conducted the event with assistance from Kerri MacPhee, the NSO RBC conducting apprentice for 2017-18) along with NSO Education and Community Outreach Co-ordinator, Jennifer Brennan and educational consultant, Dr. Andrea Rose.
The session lasted for about an hour culminating in the full ensemble creating a rousing rendition of the ode.
