Trio of qualifiers from this province vying for top comic title

Local comedians Steve Coombs, Nicole Downton and Matt Wright have made it to the semifinals in a national comedy contest with a $15,000 prize.

The three comics were chosen among 12 performers who showcased their talents at Yuk Yuks in Uptown Gourmet Grill and Bar last week, in an event hosted by Toronto comedian and SiriusXM Canada Laughs host Ben Miner.

Miner later praised the St. John’s comedians on the May 30 episode of the Global Toronto Morning Show.

“(Newfoundlanders) wake up the funniest people in Canada, so you can imagine when they’re intentionally funny, it’s awesome,” Miner said. “They’re the nicest people on the face of the planet.”

Videos of Coombs, Downton and Wright’s sets will go online and be opened up to public voting for a three-week period starting July 9. The comedian with the most votes from each city will perform at the JFL42 SiriusXM Top Comic Gala during Toronto’s Just for Laughs 10-day festival in September, and the winner will receive a $15,000 cash prize.
