ArtsNL announces finalists for Winterset literary prize

Stan Dragland, Sara Tilley and Leslie Vryenhoek are the finalists for the 2015 BMO Winterset Award, ArtsNL announced this morning.

Dragland is nominated for “Strangers and Others: Newfoundland Essays,” Tilley is nominated for her novel “Duke,” and Vryenhoek is nominated for her novel “Ledger of the Open Hand.”

The three finalists will read from their books and take questions from the public at a reading and reception at The Rooms theatre, 7 p.m. March 23. The BMO Winterset Award winner will be named during a ceremony at Government House March 24.

The winner will receive $12,500 while the other two finalists will each receive $3,000.

Publishers from across the country submitted a total of 31 books by native-born or resident Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for the award. Books in any genre published in 2015 were eligible.

The jury consisted of Megan Coles, Chris Brookes and Randy Street.

The BMO Winterset award was established in 2000 by journalist and author Richard Gwyn in honour of his late wife, author and social historian Sandra Fraser Gwyn. The award is managed by ArtsNL.
