Sarah Bennett of St. John’s is one of five finalists for the 2017 CBC Nonfiction Prize.

Bennett’s story “Caught” earned her the spot in this year’s short list. Last year, she made the long list for the prize with “The Monster You Know You Are.”

Also shortlisted this year are Becky Blake of Toronto, Alisha Mascarenhas of Montreal, Gail Nardi of Whitehorse, and Carla Powell of Liverpool, N.S.

The winner, to be announced on Sept. 19, will take home $6,000 from Canada Council for the Arts and take part in a writing residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Their story will be published on CBC Books and in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine.

CBC Literary Prizes are given to authors for their unpublished work in Canada.
