Artistic director Levi Curtis predicts a strong season for local group

GRAND BANK, NL— Levi Curtis, the artistic director for the Grand Bank Regional Theatre, is looking forward to the season opener.

“I can tell you that it’s going to be a strong season,” Curtis told The Southern Gazette. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and we are set to entertain.”

He confirmed three plays will be included in this year’s lineup.

Two of the shows have been written by him, including a musical titled “A Life” featuring the music of Neil Diamond.

Curtis said he choice to feature the music of the artist because of the dynamic of his music.

“There’s some very soft and sad pieces, there’s some excited and very fast pace pieces,” he explained. “Plus, let’s face it, he is a musical icon, people do like his music and it does cover a lot.”

Curtis used the example of the number of people who join in when a band plays a cover of Diamond’s song “Sweet Caroline.

“They might only know the chorus but they’re bopping along with the whole bloody thing…”

Another play penned by Curtis to be featured this season is the comedy “Operation Roy, Al.”

A play written by Kathleen Hollett entitled “Runaway” will feature the music of the 80s.

“Set in the 1980's, Runaway is the story of a group of individuals as they navigate their lives following a series of secrets, the trials of love, and learning to accept the uncontrollable circumstances that life throws at them,” explained Hollett.

A native of the town of Grand Bank, Hollett is currently in her second year of studies at Sheridan College in the Honours Bachelor of Musical Theatre Performance program.

Hollett said when Curtis asked her to write a musical for this summer, he thought the music of the 80s would be really fun for an audience.

“I couldn't agree more,” she said.

“I've always been a big fan of the 80s sound, and it was really fun to incorporate these songs that everyone knows so well into a story. I'm really excited to show everyone what we've got to offer this year.”

This year’s cast includes Kathleen Hollett, Zachary Peach, Noah Sheppard, Cody Harvey and Aiden Young. This year’s guest artist will be Angela Blackwood.

Behind the scenes will be Corey King - lights and sound, Tyler Knickle - assistant lights and sound, Sarah Cormier - stage manager and Tracey Blagdon - wardrobe.

This year’s opening gala will be held on July 7, the regular season will open on July 10 and run until Aug. 25, for information, showtimes or how you can become a sponsor call (709) 873-ACT2 (2282) or visit http://www.grandbanktheatre.ca/.
