This week, Katherine Walters of St. John’s was presented with the 2017 Craft Award for Interpretation of Provincial History.
The award by The Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (HSA) is given to a craftsperson who uses their skills to present the history and heritage of the province in a unique way.
Walters, of The Purple Raven Boutique, is a wire artist and jewelry maker specializing in wire knitting techniques.
She makes bold jewelry for both women and men.
Many of her pieces have been inspired by her own experiences of living in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The inspiration for Walters Flora and Fauna Collection came from the stark beauty of the province’s rugged landscape.
The White Fleet, Sheilagh’s Brush and the annual church garden party are all stories and traditions that inspired Walters’ Traditions Collection.
Walters says her goal is that every piece of jewelry represents a story, and that its wearer can make it a part of their own.
