February is Heart Health Month, and at HealthQuest, we are working with our clients to help them optimize their heart health.

And what does that look like? For some people, improving their heart health means finding a new pair of sneakers to help them on their daily run or during a workout at the gym. For others, it is finding a comfortable sports bra for exercising from our Amoena boutique. But for many, it is anything that will help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis, which can be huge deterrent for many people wanting to exercise.

Does this describe you? If so, rest assured, you aren’t alone. One in five Canadians struggle with arthritis. The pain and inflammation associated with this disease can stop you dead in your tracks. Trying to get through the daily rigors of life can be a challenge enough for many, so the thought of exercising can seem overwhelming.

Arthritis is the most prevalent chronic health condition in Canada. It actually encompasses a group of over 100 diseases, the main symptom being inflammation and pain in the joints. This often debilitating condition can be exasperated by the cold and damp weather of Newfoundland, resulting in painful “flare ups.”  These flare ups, which include joint stiffness, are a key reason people neglect physical activity, which in turn, leads to a decrease in cardiovascular health.

Research shows there is a significant link between people who have arthritis and other co-morbidities, such as heart disease or diabetes. And the situation can be a catch-22 since two of the major risk factors for arthritis are excess weight and physical inactivity. As such, it is vital people maintain an active lifestyle, especially if they are already diagnosed with arthritis. But the problem is that exercising hurts.  So you stop. We get that. But not exercising raises your risk for heart disease significantly. It truly is a vicious circle, but we want to help you. At HealthQuest, we understand the situation. We have a team of trained health professionals who will work with you to assure you meet your heart health goals. We offer easy options to help you manage the pain and inflammation of arthritis, such as bracing, compression, and orthopedic footwear that will help support your affected joints and allow you to increase your daily activity safely and comfortably.

“Living to your full potential can only happen when your body has the support it needs. No matter what hurdles life throws your way, personalized wellness solutions are just part of the equation to keep you performing your best,” says Deanna Skinner, regional manager at HealthQuest.
