Safe workplaces are not only required by law, but they are something everyone expects — for themselves and their loved ones. We can all agree that even one jobsite accident is too many, which is why one Mount Pearl company has come up with a way to make safety training truly EASY™.
Effective and Affordable Safety for You (EASY) is a proprietary safety training system developed by Scott Glynn. Building on more than 30 years of experience in the skilled trades industries — oil and gas (off-shore and on-shore) and the safety training field — Scott developed the EASY™ to use system by working side by side and listening to personnel from the various industries and positions, including top oil executives to individuals struggling with literacy.
Business partner, Colleen Glynn, who brings her experience in finance and marketing among other things to the business says, “The focus of this system is to give people an EASY™ system to follow, a calm and fun atmosphere using a TELL-SHOW-DO methodology that will benefit the highest executive to people with illiteracy issues,” something that not only makes the system unique and valuable to Occupational Health and Safety boards in Newfoundland, but nationally.
Another unique and valuable benefit of the EASY™ training system, according to Scott is that MGM National, the company the Glynn’s started with business partner Colin Murphy to distribute the program, is that the EASY™ trainers will go to the client instead of the client having to come to them.
“A lot of places don’t have a safety training company set up in their areas. We are looking to train individuals in our system so that if someone is looking for training in rural Newfoundland for instance, they don’t have to travel to St. John’s or Corner brook for training. We have personnel in their geographical area that are certified, ready and able to train in our EASY™ courses,” Scott says.
“There is a great need for this. Even in the major city centres, although there are safety training companies, most of them are operating with big buildings, big overhead and their costs are already high, so what we are doing is bringing the training to the client, which in turn, reduces the big overhead and the cost to the client,” Colleen adds.
Apart from convenience and cost-effectiveness, Colleen says this feature is something that is imperative for businesses requiring safety training. “Training on-site for companies ensures participants are learning on their own equipment, using their own paperwork, making it easier for them to learn and remember material that is specific to that company and their work environment. This all contributes to making their personal jobsite and its workers that much safer.”
MGM National is currently recruiting trainers nation-wide. “We have specific criteria we are looking for in an individual and we hand-select trainers who come with their own industry experience, which allows us to bring a variety of skills and knowledge to the table for everyone,” Colin says.
MGM provides trainers with everything they need to bring the EASY™ training system to businesses across the country. One of the key reasons the course is so effective according to Scott is that all the courses are delivered using a proven instructional technique that is designed to maximize information retention and a comprehensive understanding of all the topics delivered.
“Studies show that there are three different types of mature learners: auditory — people who HEAR and LEARN; visual — people who SEE and LEARN; and kinesthetic — people who DO and LEARN,” Scott explains. “Regardless of your learning style, studies have proven that information is more easily understood and retained by experiencing all three of these inputs versus only one or two.”
Scott says that by using this teaching method in conjunction with their unique training principles the material is easier to understand, and learning becomes fun, interesting, effective and interactive.
“When learning is fun, we learn without effort,” Colleen adds.
And to further ensure trainers and trainees receive the most out of the EASY™ training system, MGM National also sells all of the safety equipment companies and individuals may require, such as Class AE safety harnesses, gas safety monitors, safety glasses, safety gloves, safety vests and adjustable Class F lanyards to name just a few. MGM is also qualified to conduct safety equipment inspections for companies.
“Our motto is ‘Safety — The Tool for Life,’ after all, without Safety, what environment do you have? We want to contribute to ensuring families always have their loved ones coming home!” says Colleen.
