Anne Norris was back in provincial court in St. John’s Tuesday. The 29-year-old, who looked healthy and alert, smiled at family members as she was escorted into the courtroom from the holding cells by sheriff’s officers.

She spoke to her lawyer, Rosellen Sullivan, before proceedings began.

Norris pleaded guilty to three charges — uttering threats and resisting arrest in relation to the first incident and breaching court orders for a second.

The first incident happened in May 2015, when Norris was a voluntary patient at the Waterford Hospital. According to the facts, read in court by Crown prosecutor Jeff Summers, Norris became unruly while being transferred to another unit at the hospital.

She became violent and screamed at a nurse, who was a single parent, “I know you have three boys and when I get out of here, I swear I’m coming for every single one of them.” She also screamed obscenities and later yelled out that she would kill the boys.

When police showed up, she continued to behave out of control. When officers escorted her to the police car, she tried to escape. During a struggle, she kicked one officer in the upper thigh and another in the mid-section. They weren’t seriously injured. She was taken to the lockup and after an appearance in court, was released on court orders on May 26.

On April 17, 2016, Norris was arrested after she was spotted coming out of Tols’ Timeout Lounge. She had been under strict court orders not to enter any establishment that sells alcohol.

She was taken to jail and court and once again, was released on court orders the following day.

Lawyers agreed to suggest a week-long jail term, with three days’ credit, leaving four days left on the term. Norris was ordered to have no contact with the nurse she threatened or anyone in her immediate family. The sentence included a year’s probation and a DNA order.

Judge Jacqueline Brazil endorsed the sentence, seeing the incidents marked the first time Norris had been in trouble with the law.

But that wasn’t the last.

Three weeks after the second incident in 2016, Norris was behind bars again — this time suspected of killing a St. John’s man.

Norris — once a skilled athlete — is suspected of murdering 46-year-old Marcel Reardon, who was found dead May 9, 2016, under the steps of an apartment building on Brazil Street, in the downtown area of the capital city.

Norris has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Her trial is set for January 2018. She will stay in jail until then.
