CLARENVILLE, N.L. — For the second time in just over a month, an inmate has died at the Women’s Correctional Centre in Clarenville.
RCMP in Clarenville confirmed that information for The Packet today.
The death of 28-year-old Samantha Piercey occurred on Saturday May 26, just five weeks after a 27-year-old woman died after choking on her lunch.

These two deaths, as well as one at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s in August, 2017, are now the subject of an independent external review.
According to the May 28 press release from the department, retired Superintendent Marlene Jesso will be conducting the review. Jesso has more than 34 years of progressive investigative experience.
The department says the review will examine how staff respond to the situations, as well as the appropriateness of policy and procedure, with Jesso providing appropriate recommendations.
