HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, NL – Soldiers from the 5th Canadian Division of the Canadian Army in Atlantic Canada are currently taking part in Exercise Northern Sojourn in Labrador.
The annual advanced winter warfare training exercise began at 5 Wing Goose Bay on March 2 and will wrap up this Sunday.
The exercise gives solders the skills needed to respond to various potential scenarios in Canada’s northern terrain.
Skills the roughly 400 soldiers from units throughout Atlantic Canada are honing include defensive winter warfare tactics, live-fire rifle training, winter survival skills and mounted snowmobile operations.
The soldiers are part of the 5th Canadian Division’s Immediate Reaction Unit and Arctic Response Company Group - teams that are deployed on short notice to help out after a natural disaster or emergency.
Fifty American and eight Polish soldiers are also participating in the training.
On Tuesday, the soldiers hosted a community day in Churchill Falls near the exercise’s forward operating base to showcase the Canadian Army's winter warfare capabilities to residents of the area.
