UPPER ISLAND COVE, N.L. — An update to a case involving an impaired driver and a vehicle collision in Upper Island Cove was released Thursday afternoon.
Inspector Bruce Singer, Officer in Charge of RCMP NL's Major Crimes Unit, provided an update on a suspected impaired driver involved in a motor vehicle collision in Upper Island Cove on June 1, 2018. The investigation into the events surrounding the motor vehicle collision is being led by the Major Crimes Unit. The driver, Brent Hillier Jr., has been charged with dangerous driving, as well as operating a vehicle without insurance.
Hillier is set to appear in court on Wednesday, Aug 8, at the Harbour Grace Provincial Court.
Four days after the incident, RCMP requested an external body to conduct an independent investigation in relation to the police officer who responded to the vehicle collision. Police have confirmed the responding officer was related to Hillier. The news release said the request was made in the interest of transparency and public confidence.
That matter remains under investigation and the release said RCMP will not comment further on it until the investigation is completed.
