Overcoming stress is paramount for everyone during the holiday season.
Those who are under financial burden feel this more than most as they attempt to provide for their loved ones.
A local organization — Thrive — for the past number of years has attempted to help ease the stress and financial pressure for people living in poverty.
Thrive is looking for the public’s help in stocking the shelves of its Christmas Store located at 108 Lemarchant Rd. in St. John’s.
“For the young people who participate in our programs, buying a special gift for loved ones at Christmas is just not financially possible, but of course, like any of us, they still want to share in the joy of giving something special to someone they care about,” Thrive executive director Angela Crockwell stated in a news release Monday.
“We started the Christmas Store to help make that experience possible for people. The items are sold at a minimal cost, but it still gives people the feeling that this isn’t a handout.”
Funds raised from the sale of the items are then used to purchase supplies such as food, warm clothing and emergency supplies to assist in Thrive’s ongoing outreach programs.
“Essentially we’re looking for donations of things you would normally see under any Christmas tree on Christmas morning,” Crockwell said.
“Household items and décor, children’s toys and clothing, games, books, Christmas decorations, makeup, jewelry, men’s and women’s clothing and personal care items,” Crockwell stated.
Thrive is an umbrella organization that works with the community to address gaps in services, build community partnerships, increase awareness of existing programs and services, and conduct outreach to the most marginalized youth.
Its programs and services include alternative learning, outreach services, velocity adventure, blue door-exiting program for individuals engaged in the sex trade, prevention of sexual exploitation and youth development.
Donations of new items for the Christmas Store can be dropped off at 108 Lemarchant Rd. between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. until Dec. 8. The store will be open from Dec. 11-20.
