The City of Corner Brook has taken steps to introduce cannabis retail as a permissible use in certain areas of the city.

Recently, the provincial government announced that a cannabis retail outlet will be established in the Dominion grocery store at Murphy Square.

The city has already completed a public consultation about cannabis retail locations in the downtown area and at large-scale commercial zones such as Murphy Square or malls in the city. No objections were received.

During Monday’s public meeting, Corner Brook’s city council resolved to amend its development regulations to allow cannabis retail as a use in the three referenced zones in anticipation of other outlets besides the one at Dominion being established eventually.

Municipalities won’t have the authority to grant cannabis retail licences, which will only be available from the provincial government. Municipalities will have the power to determine what locations the products can be sold.
