FORTEAU, N.L. - The search for a missing kayaker from Quebec is underway near Forteau.
RCMP in Forteau said an off-duty officer came across a damaged kayak on Tuesday, Aug. 14 approximately five kilometres west of the south coast Labrador town.
A subsequent investigation determined the boat belonged to 24-year-old Charles Elie Mercier from Ste-Mathilde E., La Malbaie, Que. and that the young man is missing.
Police immediately instigated a search involving Sûreté du Québec, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Rangers. Those efforts are ongoing.
