The driver of a car that slammed into a light pole early Friday morning just before 5:30 a.m. ran from the scene on foot, leaving his injured female passengers in the wrecked vehicle. A witness on scene said the male driver took off running east on Topsail Road as his female passengers waited in the damage car for recue personnel to arrive. Luckily firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department only had to walk a few feet to the scene as the car had crashed into the utility pole just feet away from the station. Two of the firefighters drove east on Topsail Road in an attempt to locate the missing driver but were unable to find him. At least one of the women, who was crying and distraught, had to be taken to the waiting ambulance by stretcher. The pole appeared to have very minor damage but the front end of the car was completely destroyed. Officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) arrived on scene to investigate the incident.

A police spokesman later said the RNC is not expecting to lay charges.
