MARYSTOWN, NL – Parents of children enrolled in the early French immersion program at Sacred Heart Academy in Marystown received some welcome news earlier this month.
According to a Feb. 3 Facebook post by parent Jess Reid, “we received official confirmation today that the (early) French immersion program will go ahead in September at SHA!
“Thanks to everyone who reached out, signed petitions and wrote letters of support. We are all so very happy.”
Reid, who was outspoken in her objection to a decision by the Newfoundland and Ladrador English School District (NLESD) to remove the early immersion model from the school due to lack of enrollment, said parents in the area are pleased with the decision to keep it.

Students enrolled in the program, however have increased from 10 students to 14.
“I'm very happy,” she told the Southern Gazette. “It shows that when our kids matter, people can pull together and make things right.”
The news was also celebrated by the local chapter of Canadian Parents for French. Charlene Evans said the group was thrilled when it got the news.
“There was a tremendous amount of community support behind our endeavor to keep early French immersion at Sacred Heart Academy,” she said.
“Voices coming together to ensure our children will have the educational options they deserve.”
