It’s shaping up to be a treacherous day for travelling and just going about your daily business in general across much of the island of Newfoundland tomorrow, April 18.
Environment Canada has freezing rain warnings in effect for everywhere on the island except the Northern Peninsula.
The weather is anticipated to develop in the southwest this evening and spread northeastward through the night.
Along the south and west coasts the freezing rain will fall mainly inland and over higher terrain. The immediate coastline will experience rain.
The freezing rain will turn to rain from southwest to northeast through the day on Wednesday as temperatures rise.
Wind warnings are also in place for the west coast including Bay St. George, Gros Morne, Corner Brook and vicinity and Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity. A Wreckhouse wind warning is in effect as well.
Marine Atlantic’s Cabot Strait ferry crossings this evening have been cancelled until tomorrow at 11:45 a.m.
"The Ontario ice storm has its sights set on us," says Cindy Day, chief meteorologist for SaltWire Network. "Extended periods of freezing rain will fall ahead of the low with rain and wind as the systems travels through. The northern edge of the low is cold and that will mean snow for Labrador, as much as 10-15 cm of snow by Wednesday evening. Clearing will be gradual over the weekend with a cool north wind and flurries. The early part of next week does look promising with sunshine and more heat!"
