LITTLE BURNT BAY, N.L. – A family has been left with not much more than the clothes on their backs after a fire destroyed a residence in Little Burnt Bay last night.

According to Little Burnt Bay Fire Chief Terry Edwards, the call came in at about 1:35 a.m. on Monday, June 25. Crews responded within 10 minutes. He said the fire must have been burning for some time before the call came in because flames were going through the roof when firefighters arrived on scene.

No one was in the house at the time.

Edwards said the cause of the fire appears to be electrical, and that it seems to have started in the back near the laundry room.

Edwards said he called the Embree Fire Department for backup as soon as he got to the station and that he appreciates their assistance in tackling the blaze.

Lewisporte RCMP confirmed the incident, but said there was no indication of a criminal component, so there is no police investigation. No one was hurt in the fire, as the house was empty at the time.

“Now, the people are left without a house and without clothes, that’s more the problem for them,” Sgt. Raymond Julien told the Pilot June 25.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that the Red Cross was not operating in the area. The Red Cross does operate in this area and can be reached at 1-800-222-9597 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Pilot apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.
