The province’s Progressive Conservatives have overtaken the governing Liberals in support from decided voters in the latest quarterly polling results from Corporate Research Associates (CRA).

On the question of what party you would vote for if an election was held today, PC support is up to 42 per cent of decided voters, from 33 per cent in February 2018.

“This result can be accredited to a downward trend in preference for the governing Liberal party over the last six months, combined with an increase in support for the PC party since last quarter,” says a statement issued by CRA on the results.

The Liberals have moved to 36 per cent from 41 per cent in the same period. It’s a continued slip from 44 per cent support in November 2017.

The New Democratic Party slipped slightly and stands at 22 per cent support, down from 24 per cent.

The poll suggests three in 10 voters remain undecided.

On the leaders

One of the questions involved the current party leaders and specifically asked: “Which one of the following individuals would you most prefer as premier of Newfoundland and Labrador?”

Ches Crosbie came out the most favoured leader, with 34 per cent in support. That’s up from the 27 per cent for Paul Davis in the last poll results.

And while the provincial Liberals continued to drop off, support for Premier Dwight Ball was considered to be stable. Ball held 27 per cent of voters, compared to 28 per cent in February 2018.

NDP Leader Gerry Rogers pulled in 19 per cent, compared to the 23 per cent for Lorraine Michael last time around.

Six per cent of those responding preferred none of the three leaders, while 14 per cent of those polled offered no definite opinion.

Overall, the poll involved residents of the province 18 years of age or older, between May 3 and May 17. Overall results are considered accurate within plus or minus 3.5 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
