PORT AUX BASQUES, NL – In July of 2016 the town of Port aux Basques had workers paint two rainbow crosswalks – one in front of town hall, and one crossing LeGrow Street to St. James Regional High School.
The idea of painting rainbow crosswalks was first proposed to council by a group of high school students and passed easily and quickly through council with no fuss whatsoever.
“We involved some of the high school students and we were more than happy to do so,” recalls deputy mayor Todd Strickland.
The sidewalks did not get repainted last summer, but that was due to unforeseen delays.
“We ran into a very late paving season and it was unable to be completed, but unofficial plans to get it done for this year were in place by the past council and I don’t think there will be any issue to continue on with that plan for this year,” said Strickland.
Mayor John Spencer agreed.
“Inclusion is a core value of this council.”
