Marystown native Kaetlyn Osmond is an Olympic gold medallist.
The 22-year-old Osmond and six other Canadian figure skaters moved the top of the podium with a first-place finish in the team event at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea today.
It is the first gold medal for Canada at the event and the first ever Olympic gold for Osmond and Canadian veteran men's skater Patrick Chan.
The two had won silver medals with Canada in the team event at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., clinched the top spot in the team figure skating competition after finishing third in the women's free skate before teammates Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the ice dance segment of the event.
Osmond had skated the short program in the women's singles segment of the event on the weekend, also finishing third. Teams were allowed to make two lineup switches and Canada went with Daleman — the reigning Canadian champion — in the free skate.
The two will skate again at these Olympics, in the women's singles competition later this week.
Canada's team gold medal was set up by three-time world champion Chan earlier in the day. He placed first with a score of 179.75 in the men's free program, keeping the veteran Canadian team in first place and setting the stage for Daleman.
Olympic Athletes from Russia were second at 58 and the United States was third with 53.
