Some businesses and government offices ground to a halt and daily routines were hampered for many during a prolonged power outage in the Corner Brook and surrounding area Monday.

A large portion of Corner Brook, mainly the eastern half of the city and parts of the downtown, Mount Bernard Avenue and University Drive area lost power just after 10 a.m.
The electrical outage extended to the neighbouring towns of Hughes Brook and Irishtown-Summerside on the north shore of the Bay of Islands and Massey Drive. It also reached as far west as Gallants, including the cottage areas of George’s Lake and Pinchgut Lake.
According to Newfoundland Power, overhead line damage was the culprit. There were reports of a bird having made contact with electrical wires and although, according to Newfoundland Power, this may have been related to the outage, it was not in the same location as the reported damage requiring repairs.
Crews were dispatched to a tower in the Massey Drive area to carry out the necessary work.
Some areas of Corner Brook got power back at around 12:30, but most were out for much longer. After initially expecting power to be restored by 2 p.m., the time was pushed back to 3 p.m.
Most areas were restored by 3 p.m., but another problem — this one at the Bayview substation, near the eastern exit of the Lewin Parkway to the Trans-Canada Highway, kept service from being returned to all parts of Corner Brook East and Massey Drive until a little after 4 p.m.
