Indigena prepping for Golden Globes event

A company specializing in natural and organic skin-care products based in Topsail is set to offer its goods to television and film stars early next year at an event connected to the Golden Globe Awards.

Indigena will be present in the Secret Room Events 2013 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Style Lounge in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Jan. 11, where attendees of the awards show will have an opportunity to accept gifts from a variety of companies interested in gaining exposure for their products.

“We’ll actually have a table there,” said Indigena founder and president Lisa Walsh, who will attend the event along with two models. “We’ll be educating the people in the lounge on the products.”

The company specializes in beauty products, including skin-care and hair-care items, amongst others. Its products are sold online and through a variety of local vendors in the St. John’s area.

They will promote two items geared towards female award nominees and other celebrities in town for the Golden Globes. The Blueberry Bliss Sugar Scrub is used for face and body skin care. Indigena’s travel set contains several products, including facial lotion and lip balm, and is packaged in a wooden cylinder.

“The Golden Globes gives us the opportunity to be exposed to the world stage, so I guess I’m excited,” said Walsh.

“I get goosebumps when I think about it, and I’m a little bit scared.”

The opportunity to attend the gifting event came through Walsh’s participation in a trade mission to the Natural Products West Expo held in Anaheim, Calif., in March of this year.


“That’s where I met the lady who reached out to us for this event,” said Walsh, who noted she would not have been able to attend the trade show in March without the help of provincial and federal governments.

Reaching the Californian market is highly attractive to Indigena, as Walsh points out the state’s population is larger than all of Canada’s.

“Our products are cruelty-free. We use natural, organic ingredients. We don’t use chemical preservatives. We use essential oils and natural botanicals. So our target market is California, so that’s why we want to focus our energy on the west coast of the (United States).

A great deal of work has gone into the company over the last number of years, according to Walsh, who produces the products in Topsail. She has been selling her goods under the Indigena brand since 2009.

Aside from preparing for Beverly Hills, Indigena has been working with Memorial University to test native Newfoundland berries for potential usage in cosmetic products. The company already makes use of local seaweed.

“Over the next 10 months, we are going to be testing those products through Memorial University’s biology lab,” she said. “They’re going to extract the antioxidants and the anti-aging properties out of these berries.”
