The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) General Investigation Section has arrested and charged a St. John’s man in relation to a theft of coins from a commercial business in the city.

Ken Rees, 35, was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code of Canada and possession of marijuana under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Police say he was arrested this morning without incident at his home. Rees had a lengthy criminal record, including break and entries and thefts.

According to the RNC, sometime before 10:55 p.m., Jan. 10, entry was gained into a commercial business, East Coast Coins, at 36 Pearson St. Items stolen included coins and bank notes.

East Coast Coins owner Rod O’Driscoll had offered a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of those involved in the robbery.

O’Driscoll said Monday the reward likely helped in information coming forward. He’s not certain yet how many of the stolen coins have been recovered.
